Something a little different from us this week.

Customer called us a few months ago as they were having problems with their listed outbuilding namely the roof was leaking and sagging.

As we have carried out many listed building works for customers Barclay&Co were the perfect fit for this job.

After discussions about which materials we could use on the new roof it was agreed Corrapol Stormproof Corrugated Low Profile sheets were to be used.

Fitted Acro props for a bit of support then we removed the old plastic sheets along with the old tin sheets and into the skip. The original roof timbers were treated then it was onto the fitting of the new sheets.

As this is a listed building the timbers were a bit twisted and we had to trim the new sheets to get a nice straight edge into the gutter.

A new Douglas Fir timber support post was fitted 150-150mm onto a concrete pad stone with metal pin from stone to post along with new timber support to brace the post.

All in all a very satisfying job and we love working on these old buildings.

The customer was super pleased with the end product and has given us probably the best review we’ve ever had as a business (see in the photos)

A recent job we carried out for a company on a building in Honiton, Devon.
We removed the first few courses of Slates along with the old roof membrane and battens and replaced with new breathable roof membrane, felt support trays and treated battens finished off with Slates on hooks.

A job we recently carried out on the old Exeter Coachworks site at Peamore.
After the old flues were removed the client wanted to sheet over the holes to keep everything dry underneath.
Sheets fixed with self tapping screws and sealed.

A new Roof recently supplied and fitted for a new customer in Exeter by Barclay&Co Ltd.

We were recommended for this job by one of our customers but we still had to be competitive with our quote as we were competing with three other companies for this roof project.

I’m pleased to say the owner chose us after looking through our portfolio of other works we’ve carried out for other customers.

The roof had been repaired over the years to a poor standard and the owner finally decided to have a new roof fitted instead of wasting money on repair after repair.

After much discussion on the finish with the owners they decided to go with a Spanish Slate rather than a man made slate.

So off with the old roof and on with the new.

New felt support trays fitted along with premium grade roof membrane, treated roof battens, Spanish Slates and lots of code 4 lead finished off with a Dry Ridge/ Hip system.

A job we recently carried out for a customer while they were overseas.

New Velux Roof window supplied and fitted into the roof plus carpentry works.

Remove old render on the fire wall and re-render with Sand/ Cement along with a Sponge finish.

Barclay and Co not only offer full roof replacements but we also carry out plenty of repair work on roofs that need a little TLC.

In this case the verge was leaking due to the mortar giving up which led to water damage inside the en-suite bathroom.

Old roof membrane and battens removed then replaced with premium grade membrane and timber battens then re-tiled back in with a new mortar verge.

Finally finished… what started as something small ended up being a completely different job that was quoted for due to major changes by Heritage. You got to love these listed building jobs 😁

The old man made slate roof which should have never been on this roof was removed and disposed of along with the old felt and battens.

Next new sister rafters had to be fitted to strengthen the roof to the three sides as the original rafters were in poor condition.

New premium grade roof membrane fitted along with new treated timber battens.

The box gutter was in poor condition due to repair after repair over the years so new lining fitted along with new lead and welded on the joints and sealed to the three sides of the gutter with new 9 inch flashings all round.

The parapet walls were in poor condition with cracks and loose render so this was repaired then coated with a waterproof fibreglass based resin to add strength to the walls.

New Spanish Slates (37’s) were fitted to the three sides of the roof and finished off on a dry ridge/ hip system using Clay ridges and hips.

A challenging project for us but nonetheless a very pleasing outcome and the customer is thrilled with the finish as are we.

So here is another part of our current listed building project in Exeter.

This wall was moving and it was becoming very unstable. This was very dangerous especially given the fact there is a pavement directly underneath with pedestrians walking up and down 😳

The stud wall had to be removed along with the fibre board and as you can see from the photos it was completely rotten.

Once the wall had been removed it turned out that years of water damage had spread onto the flat roof and rotted that away as well.

We have now been asked by the client to replace the wall and a new flat roof too.

A little job we managed to do for a customer in Sidmouth this week.
The old valley was leaking so we removed the valley tiles and the old felt and replaced with new breathable membrane and re-cut the valley back in finished off with pointing the valley to create a watertight seal going up the valley.
