Designing a home that belongs in a protected landscape takes a greater level of care.

Plinth House sits on the edge of a conservation area within the Cornwall National Landscape. It replaced a white-rendered bungalow with a dominant red-tiled roof. The new house is darker, slate-clad, low against the sky, a form that settles into the hillside rather than sitting on top of it.

Valley House

Before the pour.

The underfloor heating pipe work sits within an insulated structural slab, continuous insulation running beneath the floor and up the sides to keep heat loss to a minimum.

The same pipe work will warm the slab through winter and cools it in summer, holding the house at a steady, comfortable temperature whatever the season.

On the dining side, the island at Plinth House works more as a sideboard than a kitchen unit: open shelves holding the bowls and plates that get used every day.

It's raised off the floor too, meeting the ground lightly, like a piece of furniture rather than a block of cabinetry.

Plinth House

At the garden edge, the plinth drops away and the terrace bleeds into the meadow. Raised on its granite base, the house holds the view clear of the rooftops below and out to the harbour beyond.

The eaves reach far enough over the terrace to give shelter from a shower or the midday sun, without closing off the view.
