🚨 PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN CALLING A LOCKSMITH 🚨
We’ve just come across a video from This Morning showing a man who was reportedly charged over £3,000 following a locksmith call-out and lock change.
He searched Google, called one of the first companies he saw and was initially told the cost would be around £75.
But once the work was completed, the final bill was thousands.
Charges reportedly included things like:
🔐 Around £500 for a door handle
🔐 Around £700 for a mechanism
🔐 Plus additional call-out, labour and parts costs
Unfortunately, locksmith scams are very real, and this post isn’t about scaring anyone — it’s about making people aware of what to look out for.
When you’re locked out of your home or your door suddenly won’t lock, you’re naturally in a rush. You want someone there ASAP.
And that’s exactly when some rogue traders take advantage.
You search “locksmith near me”, click one of the first results and see something like “Locksmith from £49”.
⚠️ Being at the top of Google doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a trusted local locksmith. Companies can pay to appear prominently in search results.
Some rogue operators advertise extremely cheap prices to get through the door, then once they arrive they’ll tell you things like:
❌ “It’s a high-security lock, so we’ll have to drill it.”
❌ “The whole mechanism needs replacing.”
❌ “You’ll need a new handle as well.”
Before you know it, that cheap call-out has turned into a huge bill.
So what can you do to protect yourself?
✅ Check genuine reviews — and don’t just look at the star rating.
✅ Don’t automatically choose the first company you see on Google.
✅ Search for the business on Facebook and other social media platforms.
✅ Try to speak directly to the locksmith who will be attending.
✅ Be cautious of generic call centres claiming to be “local”.
✅ Ask for pricing upfront and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
✅ Make sure you’re told about additional costs BEFORE work is carried out.
✅ If a price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
✅ Where possible, use an established local locksmith.
Most importantly — don’t panic.
Being locked out or unable to secure your home is stressful, but take a few minutes to research who you’re allowing into your property.
