Why do weeds seem to be loving this dry weather while your lawn turns brown?

- Many weeds have deeper roots, allowing them to access moisture further down in the soil.

- Meanwhile, lawn grass often goes dormant during prolonged dry weather to protect itself.

- As the grass slows down, weeds face less competition for space, light and nutrients.

The best long-term defence isn’t endless weedkiller, it’s a dense, healthy lawn that naturally leaves weeds with fewer opportunities to establish.

✋ If you’ve only got a few larger weeds, hand pulling is often the best option during drought. Once the weather cools and growth returns, that’s the ideal time to deal with any remaining weeds.

Is your lawn dead?

Before you assume your lawn has died during the drought, try this simple test.

Gently tug at the grass from the base. As near to the soil as you can.

✅ If it stays attached, the crown is still alive and your lawn is likely dormant.

❌ If it comes away easily with little resistance, those plants have probably died.

Dormant lawns can recover surprisingly quickly once cooler weather and rain return. Those that were thin and patchy before the drought, may need a little extra help.

Why we topdress after seeding...

You’ll notice there are lots of different ways you can apply top dressing. I choose based on the lawn I am renovating.

The application method isn’t what’s important.

The goal is the same every time: to give the new grass seed the best possible chance of success.

A light top dressing helps improve seed-to-soil contact, retain moisture and protect the seed while it germinates.

It’s another small step that can make a big difference to the end result. I use for my renovations.

Over time, soil becomes compacted from foot traffic, mowing and even rainfall. When that happens, air, water and nutrients struggle to reach the roots.

Aeration creates thousands of small holes through the soil, helping relieve compaction and giving the roots the space they need to grow deeper and stronger.

A healthy root system means a healthier lawn.

In the UK, spring or autumn is usually the ideal time to aerate, although every lawn is different. If you’re unsure whether yours would benefit, speak to your local UKLCA professional for advice.

Why do we scarify a lawn? 🤔

If you’ve ever seen a lawn after scarifying, it’s easy to think we’ve gone a bit too far.

In reality, we’re removing years of built-up thatch, dead grass and moss that prevent the lawn from performing at its best.

Scarifying helps:

- Improve air movement into the soil
- Help water reach the roots
- Reduce the build-up that encourages moss and disease
- Exposes the soil and helps create a seed bed if you are overseeding

Allowing your grass to actually breath, overall creates a healthier, happier lawn.

Most lawns have had a tough summer so far....

Heat, dry weather and regular use can leave them looking thinner than they did in spring. In many cases, a renovation is all that’s needed to help them recover.

Autumn is when soil temperatures are still warm, moisture levels usually improve, and new grass has the best chance to establish before winter.

I’m now down to my final renovation spaces for this autumn. Once they’re filled, any further enquiries will go onto my spring waiting list.

Great day out at the UKLCA Summer Festival seeing some familiar faces in the industry and meeting some new ones.

Always blows me away how willing people are to share tips and advice with each other.

Really enjoyed seeing how some of the best turf is made... that will soon be shipped to some premier football clubs soon (not allowed to say which teams!).

Nice to remember what the colour green looks like after this and recently.

Ever wondered what this is?

This is a leatherjacket – the larval stage of the crane fly (better known as the daddy longlegs).

They live beneath the surface of your lawn, feeding on grass roots, and can be responsible for patches of yellowing or thinning turf. They also attract birds, foxes and badgers, which can cause even more damage as they dig them up.

At this time of year, I’m starting to come across more of them during lawn inspections. The recent dry weather often encourages them closer to the soil surface where conditions are a little more favourable.

Finding the odd one isn’t usually a cause for concern. Healthy lawns can tolerate low numbers without any noticeable damage. It’s when populations become high that they start to become a real problem.

As always, the best approach is identifying the cause before treating the symptom. Not every patchy lawn needs insect control.
