This was an interesting one. A naturalistic garden planted with wildlife friendly plants using the ‘hardcore gardening’ technique. This technique is a variation on gravel gardening using a thick layer of either crushed hardcore, crushed brick or in this case sharp sand, spread over the soil. The plants are planted into this layer of material. The roots of the plants grow down through the layer of sand to the soil underneath and the sand acts as a free-draining mulch which suits dry climate plants and wild flowers. Eventually the plants here will spread and seed over the layer of sand and it will become hidden. For the moment though the client is enjoying how it reminds them of a “Californian garden”!
More photos of this garden will follow as the plants mature.

Have you been enjoying David Attenborough’s new BBC documentary series Secret Garden? Has it made you feel that you’d like to encourage more wildlife to your own garden?
Lucky for you there’s a local wildlife garden specialist offering free wildlife garden design consultations!
During your free on-site consultation I will make an assessment of how wildlife friendly your existing garden is and identify areas for improvement. I can then create a design based on this, supply plants and materials and carry out the implementation if required.
The east of England has been identified as the most nature depleted region in Europe. Our countryside is dominated by intensively farmed arable land and ecological studies show that it is often the outdoor spaces in our towns and villages such as parks and gardens that support more wildlife than the surrounding countryside. Our gardens are incredibly important in this respect; offering oases of habitat for wildlife. You don’t need acres of land to do it; even small gardens can be nature hot-spots if done right. Last week I completed the planting of fruit trees in this walled garden I designed with the client. The fruit trees are all being trained against the walls in the traditional way in order to fit the maximum number of different types of fruit in the space. The garden features apples and pears grown as espaliers and cordons along with peaches, plums and cherries grown as fans. Espaliers are where the branches are grown out and tied to equally spaced horizontal wires; fans are where the branches are fanned out on wires like the spokes of a wheel whilst cordons are where a single stem is attached to a wire set at an angle. The fruit trees include a mixture of common varieties as well as regional heritage varieties. There are also two figs being trained as fans with raspberries and loganberries growing alongside rhubarb. The raised beds will be planted with vegetables and soft fruit bushes.
