There’s something powerful about the small moments in gardening.

In this clip I’m running my hands through the soil, checking its structure, a tiny action, but one that tells you so much about what a garden needs.

These little tasks build confidence.
A small action, a visible result, a sense of capability.

Whether it’s wellbeing, gardening, or everyday life micro‑skills matter. They stack up, they reassure, and they remind you that you can do hard things by starting small.

I’ve been working on this garden for a few months now for one of my regular maintenance clients. We started in the back garden, but recently shifted our focus to the front, preparing the soil and getting everything ready for a fresh burst of colour.

The brief for this space was simple, but meaningful: bring joy back to the view from the window and make the garden feel loved again. Those kinds of briefs carry the most pressure, because you’re trusted with full creative control and you want to get it right.

The planting is designed with autumn in mind. Chrysanthemums in a mix of colours are dotted throughout the border, with yellow varieties lining the kerb for brightness and cyclamen breaking up the run with those gorgeous pops of colour. The larger edges hold h**e for structure and year‑round presence.

Under the window, we’ve added a beautiful bright pink rose with large blooms, paired with a row of Carex Evergold to give a touch of formality from the kerb side. On the window side, asters bring soft, cheerful colour right into the customer’s eyeline when they look out.

Even though the brief was simply “more colour,” we still build every design around principles like rhythm, balance and longevity. There are intentional gaps left for spring bulbs and summer annuals, this garden will continue evolving through the seasons.

It’s the beginning of the colourful, uplifting space the customer hoped for, and we truly hope they’re as happy with it as we are!

What a lovely day in the community garden. I was there with a seed table, bug hunt and some of my testing/inspection kit, and it was brilliant seeing families and neighbours getting stuck in.

I’ve attached the bug hunt sheet here too, so you can print one off for the kids (or yourself!) if you want to carry on exploring at home.

Nature gives us predictable sensory input in the form of colour, texture, scent and rhythm.

That predictability does something important: it helps regulate overwhelm.

When life feels noisy, our nervous system responds to the steadiness of plants and natural environments. The colours don’t shout. The textures don’t demand. The rhythms stay slow and familiar. It’s one of the reasons people instinctively breathe differently when they step into a garden.

I’ve been exploring how to bring these grounding elements into everyday environments where stress is part of daily life, and how simple interactions with plants can support confidence, calm and emotional regulation.

A lovely and unexpected phase 3 in this customer’s garden this morning.

They were in a real DIY mood and built their own sleepers and they look fantastic. They asked me back to create a planting scheme that ties in with the work already done, and those three long sleepers have unintentionally created a natural “runway” leading straight to the seating area at the back. I used that line of sight as the backbone of the design.

The planting follows a mirrored pattern:

🪴Nepeta on either side to frame the sleeper and bring that gorgeous mint‑and‑lemon scent

🪴Skimmia for reliable winter interest

🪴Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hamelyn Gold’ for height and that calm, soft movement along the runway

🪴Finished in the centre with pink and purple H**e, tying in beautifully with the colours and scents already in the garden and the bees absolutely love it

The two smaller sleepers at the back have their own focal point:

🪴A stunning Miscanthus sinensis ‘Strictus’ with its zebra‑striped blades and mesmerising rustle in the wind

🪴Framed by Heuchera americana ‘Marvelous Marble’, adding ground cover and tall flower spires through spring and summer

This was such a fun job to pull together, and a real sense of achievement seeing the whole scheme come to life. We hope the customer is just as pleased as we are.

Imperata ‘Red Baron’ is a grass I use often on client jobs for its height, movement, and the way it creates clean contrast against fences.

It’s at its boldest in full sun, but it still performs well in part shade, keeping that upright structure and red flush through the season.

A simple, modern way to lift a border without adding maintenance.

When we interact with plants, our nervous system responds.
Cortisol drops. Breathing slows. Sensory grounding kicks in.

It’s one of the reasons so many people feel calmer the moment they step into a garden or even just touch a leaf. Nature gives us predictable colours, textures and rhythms and our bodies recognise that safety instantly.

The more time I spend working with plants, the more I see how deeply they support confidence, stress regulation and emotional wellbeing. It isn’t just ‘nice’. It’s physiological, and it’s powerful.

This science is shaping something I’m building, something that blends plant knowledge, wellbeing, and simple, hands‑on activities that help people feel more grounded in their everyday lives.🪴
