A unique opportunity came about when a customer of mine mentioned she’d had some Oak felled & milled on her land a few years ago.
Oak is a staple in my workshop. But always of either American White or European (usually French) variety.
English Oak has become a rarity. In part due to its gnarly, distinctive character as a result of the harsher UK climate, complete with knots, shakes and medullary rays, which make it a challenge to work with. But also due to the unchecked exploitation of the natural resource post Industrial Revolution.
To be able to return this timber to source, less than 20 metres away from where the tree once stood for likely many hundreds of years, is a beautiful full circle moment. It’s been a real joy to make.
Farm to table - but with wood!
