At this time of year, we come across many fan heaters that have been left running for long periods of time. Quite often, the plug will be molded to the socket due to the high level of current drawn and the excessive heat generated.

If you are thinking of using a fan heater to keep warm this winter, we recommend you purchase one that has a safety cut off function. Failing that, try to use the heater only in very short bursts.

And never plug a fan heater into an extension lead, or run other appliances from the same socket the fan heater is connected to.

Stay warm, but safe!

Safety Tip!

It is important that appliances are fitted with the correct fuse to avoid the possibility of dangerous electrical fires.

Fuses are designed to ‘blow’ and cut off the supply of power when excessive current is drawn - or a 'surge'. Using a 13 amp fuse when an appliance only requires a 3 amp fuse is risky as the higher rated fuse may not blow in the event of a power surge. The excessive current is then free to travel through to the appliances cable – a major fire risk.

Appliances with a power rating of 700w and above should be fitted with a 13 amp fuse.

Appliances with a rating below 700w should be fitted with a 3 amp fuse.

One of the most common problems we find is a poorly maintained flex on a steam iron. Always ensure the flex on your iron is straight and kink free, or this could be the result.

Something we often come across is counterfeit I.E.C leads (detachable leads used for computer towers/monitors, printers, laptop power adaptors ect). The big giveaway on these fake leads is that the top pin on the plug is sheathed with an insulation sleeve. I.E.C leads are earthed, and require the top pin to be solid brass for strong connectivity. The fuses used in these leads are also counterfeit and are not filled with silica sand like genuine fuses are. These counterfeit fuses have been known to explode when subject to a short circuit.

If any of your I.E.C leads look like the one in the picture, bin them!

Below is a video where a plug fitted with a counterfeit fuse is subject to a short circuit.

Resent failure – a toaster with no earth connection. Left in use, it could have burnt more then just the toast.
