At Edward’s Court Extra Care facility, we worked carefully to deliver a building that supports residents to retain autonomy at home, even with additional care needs such as dementia support.
Grounded in research from Stirling University, features included:
💚 Clear signage, texture and colour for easier wayfinding
💚Connective areas and rest points within corridors for safe wandering
💚A viewing window in each flat for better home recognition and care support
💚No closed corridors – each ends with seating or a connective space with signage to help avoid residents with dementia feeling lost
💚Spaces that support hobbies, such as the outdoor potting shed
💚Warm communal spaces to avoid isolation and loneliness
This was supported by a Passivhaus design that keeps temperatures stable for better comfort as well as improving health through excellent air quality.
