Roof carpentry doesn't leave room for guesswork. Every rafter, joint, and line has to sit exactly where it should, long before anyone sees the finished result.🏗️

This is the structural stage of a refurbishment with steels newly in place, with timber framed, squared, and fixed around them with the same precision and patience we bring to every part of the build. It's slow, deliberate work, and it's the foundation that everything else depends on. 🔨

The finish gets the attention, but it's stages like this that make it possible. 🪵

From cutting in the rafters to a fully covered roof, this one's come a long way! 🔨

Since our last update, the roof structure has had felt and batten applied, ready to take the weight and hold everything together securely.

Now the tiles are on, tying the whole thing together and bringing us another step closer to watertight. 🧱

There's a real satisfaction in watching a roof go from bare timber to finished in stages like this. 🏠

A bricklayer’s-eye view of the craft. 🧱

Every joint, every course, every finish - the precision most people will never notice, but we never stop chasing it.

This is the work behind a finished wall, the part that never gets photographed, but is exactly what holds everything else up.

From concept to completion in TW12, side by side. 🏡

No detailed drawings for this project, just a set of concept renders and a clear vision of what it needed to become.

Sometimes that's all it takes when the team knows exactly what they're building towards.

A full transformation of the building's frontage - new windows and doors throughout, a striking new bay window, refreshed guttering and mouldings, and a new path and front landscaping to finish it off. 🔨

Every detail brought from render to reality. 👷

🏢 Not every Penn job is a home reveal.

This one was a commercial unit at end-of-lease, reinstated back to its shell condition to meet the landlord's dilapidation requirements. 🔨

From the "as found" state through to strip-out and reinstatement, back to full handover - it's a different side of what we do. Less about transformation, more about precision, and meeting every obligation set out in the lease. ✅

📸 July, in a nutshell.

It’s been a scorcher of a month and through every bit of the heat, our team has kept showing up on site, doing the work properly with a range of works from full refurbishments to new roofs going on. That kind of graft doesn’t go unnoticed, and we’re proud of every one of them!🔥

Behind the scenes, things have been moving too. Our maintenance team has grown, and with it came another van on the road with more hands and more capacity. We’ve also just launched a dedicated instagram page for Penn Maintenance (link in our socials highlight)!👷‍♂️

A run of projects are nearing completion, and we can’t wait to share the finished photography over the next few weeks. As those wrap up, new ones are already starting - the cycle that keeps this job interesting!🔨

We’re also bringing reels into the mix from here on, short glimpses of the process, not just the finished result.

Swipe through for a look at where July took us! 👉

Some lovely craftsmanship details starting to come together at our W3 site! 🛠️

This is the stage where a room really starts to take shape - with the structural works done, it's all about getting these smaller details just right and we can't wait to see the finished results of this property! 🏠✨

A walk through our KT14 site mid-build, and you can already see the shape of what’s coming! 🧱

Every room tells a different story of the work going into it. This is the stage before the finish, where the real craftsmanship happens, the part most people never get to see. 🔨

It’s not glamorous yet, but it’s honest work, and it’s exactly how a project like this earns its finish. 🏗️

More to come as this one takes shape!

Cutting a new roof into an old one isn't something you rush. Every rafter has to marry up with what's already there - decades-old timber meeting new, cut by eye and experience as much as by measurement. 🔨

There's no template for this. Each joint is worked out on site, checked against a roofline that's shifted and settled over decades. It's the kind of skill that doesn't come from a manual, it comes from years on the tools, and from craftsmen who take the time to get it right rather than just get it done! 🪵

This one's ready for finalised insulation, felt, batten and tiles next! A quiet stage of the job, but one of the ones that matters most, the part that holds everything else up. 🏠

Meet Simon, Managing Director at Penn Contracting 👋

Thirty years ago, Simon joined Penn as a carpenter learning joinery on real jobs, the way the trade has always been taught. Over the decades he worked his way through nearly every side of the business, picking up the kind of knowledge you only get from doing the work yourself: what good craftsmanship actually looks like, what a project needs to run well, and what it takes to earn a client's trust.

Today, as Managing Director, he leads the business and oversees its commercial and operational performance. He supports the project delivery teams, maintains relationships with clients, and sets the strategic direction that keeps every project running to the standard he was taught to hold himself to.👷⚒️

It's that hands-on experience Carpenter to Managing Director that shapes how Penn works. The people running the business are the same people who built it.🤝
