⚡ A loose connection can be a serious fire risk ⚡

During a recent Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), I picked up a high-resistance reading on a socket circuit.

Further investigation found the cause — a loose connection behind a socket supplying a microwave oven.

It might sound like a small fault, but loose electrical connections can become dangerous. A poor connection can create increased resistance, heat and arcing, particularly when the circuit is supplying a high-load appliance such as a microwave. Over time, this heat can damage the socket, wiring and surrounding materials, potentially creating a serious fire hazard.

This is exactly why regular inspection and testing of electrical installations is so important.

A circuit can appear to be working perfectly — the sockets still work, the appliances still switch on — but that doesn't necessarily mean the installation is safe.

An EICR involves testing and inspecting the installation to identify defects and deterioration that may not be obvious during normal use.

Finding a problem before it becomes an emergency could prevent damage, disruption or potentially a fire.

⚡ Can a power surge damage your electrical equipment?

🔥 Could your fuse board help prevent electrical fires?

Electrical fires can sometimes start because of tiny electrical arcs caused by damaged cables, loose connections or worn accessories.

These faults may not draw enough current to trip a standard circuit breaker, but they can generate enough heat to become a fire risk.

That's where an AFDD (Arc Fault Detection Device) comes in.

An AFDD continuously monitors the electrical supply and can detect dangerous arcing faults before they develop into something more serious.

It provides another layer of protection alongside the RCBOs in a modern consumer unit.

Although AFDDs aren't required in every home, they are increasingly recommended for certain properties and can offer valuable additional protection for your family and your home.

Electrical safety has come a long way over the years, and modern consumer units are designed with far more protection than older fuse boards.

⚡ What is an RCBO... and why does it matter?

Most homeowners have never heard of an RCBO, but it's one of the best safety features found in modern consumer units.

An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent Protection) combines two important jobs into one device:

✅ Protects against electric shock if electricity leaks to earth.
✅ Protects your wiring against overloads and short circuits.

Another big advantage is that each circuit has its own protection. So if one circuit develops a fault, only that circuit trips rather than half the house losing power.

Older fuse boards often rely on shared protection, meaning a single fault can affect several circuits.

Modern consumer units are typically fitted with RCBOs on every circuit, providing improved safety, greater convenience and easier fault finding.
