Loki would like to formally announce that he has found a Very Good Stick.

Ravens are highly intelligent, curious birds, and enrichment comes in many forms - sometimes it is a puzzle, sometimes it is a new object to explore, and sometimes it is simply a stick that has passed the very strict Loki quality control process.

At Coda Falconry, we love seeing the different personalities of our birds come through in these small moments 🙂‍↕️

Today’s personality trait: proud stick ownership.
Everyone say thank you, Loki.

Meet Hazel, the newest member of the Coda Falconry bird team, as named by you! 👋

Hazel is a female sparrowhawk who came to us at just 14 days old, when she was still a tiny ball of fluff with very serious opinions.
She is now growing quickly, settling in with the team, and already showing the sharp focus and attitude you would expect from a young bird of prey.

Sparrowhawks may be small compared to some of our other birds, but they are fast, agile and full of character - and Hazel is already making sure everyone knows she has arrived.

Please join us in welcoming Hazel to Coda Falconry 🪶

Meet Lita, our gyrfalcon and unofficial boundary coach.

Gyrfalcons are the largest falcon species in the world, native to Arctic regions and known for their strength, power and striking appearance.
Lita has taken all of this information and built an entire personality around it.

She is confident, intense, and very clear about who is allowed in her space - which makes her a surprisingly good life coach.

Her advice?
Take up space, protect your peace, make your boundaries clear. Then if all else fails, just honk.

Some birds (and people) are naturally subtle.
Teo is not one of those birds.

Birds of prey are known for their incredible eyesight, focus and intensity - which makes them fascinating to watch, photograph and work with up close.
It also means that when they decide to look at something, they *really* look at it.

In this case, not obvious at all.
Tag someone you know that would do this 😬

What happens when one of the Coda Falconry team pretends to faint in front of the Harris hawks?

A dramatic rescue?
Immediate concern?
A full bird-of-prey emergency response plan?
Not quite.

This very scientific behind-the-scenes experiment gave us a brilliant look at the personalities of our Harris hawks - observant, intelligent, mildly unimpressed, and apparently still very focused on whether food is involved.

Life with birds of prey is never boring, especially when the birds have opinions.

Birds of prey are intelligent, instinctive and highly specialised animals.
They are also very easy to imagine as tiny feathered agents of chaos.

This post is our very serious, very scientific look at what we think happens in the minds of Coda's flying team.
From Dizzy the barn owl’s unforgettable sound effects to Loki’s interest in anything shiny, every bird has their own personality - and that is a huge part of what makes working with them so fascinating.

Which one do you relate to the most?

There is absolutely enough lore for a three-part documentary.
We won’t say which bird it’s about.

But you probably know 😑

Photos we would have taken if the birds had held up their end of the deal 🦉

Beautiful branches? Yes.
Lovely natural light? Absolutely.
Birds present and cooperating? Emotionally, perhaps.

The good news is, our actual Bird of Prey Photography Workshops involve real birds, expert handlers, and much better odds of capturing something slightly more majestic than an MS Paint interpretation with wings.

Although, to be fair, these do have a certain charm.
Swipe to see nature photography as it might have been 👀

Ravens have a reputation for being clever, curious and just a little bit mysterious - and to be fair, they’ve earned it.

These intelligent birds are known for their problem-solving abilities, strong memories and highly observant behaviour, which makes them one of the most fascinating members of the corvid family.
Of course, at Coda Falconry, we also know they can have very big personalities.

So if this post reminded you of someone at work…well, we’ll leave you to deal with that information 👀
