We were asked for some help with the MVHR systems in this property. There were a number of issues but this one is important. The unit was installed in a cold loft but also it was installed behind this vertical post. No way to open up this unit for maintenance without completely disconnecting the ducts and a lot of effort - a very bad choice of location by the installer! More to follow

A large number of our installs are retrofits where we have to create spaces for the MVHR as the luxury of a plant room wasn’t designed into homes then. This is a cupboard we created in the hallway from a wardrobe in a bedroom. The walls were filled with acoustic insulation but the Zehnder machines are very quiet while in operation.
Not much extra room but so long as the access in front is clear allowing for servicing in the future that’s all you need!

A duct run up in the loft from the unit to a manifold where we took semi rigid ducts to the room valves. We always remove the loft insulation from below the ducting and then build it back up the sides allowing the duct to live in a warm space. We added to the original insulation in the loft after the install

From the store cupboard we had to bring the ducts through this space in both directions to reach downstairs rooms.
Again there was plumbing to negotiate with.
The cavity had to be insulated to create a warm space for the ducting to live in which we created using wood fibre insulation and PIR. This was taped and the woodfibre was covered with a layer of Intello Membrane and taped to the PIR and the timber floor junction to provide the air tightness. Importantly we ensured the gap behind the walls downstairs was maintained behind the insulation layer for ventilation. We also improved the insulation downstairs by blocking the cavity through the ceiling/floor void.

This was a storage cupboard upstairs in a cottage that we carried out some air tightness improvements to followed by the installation of an MVHR system. Unfortunately the upgrade of the heating to an air source shared the space but we were able to work around the plumbing with a compact Zehnder unit.

The satisfaction is in the improvement to the quality of air in the cottage that is notice as soon as you enter the front door. Our clients are delighted with the efficiency of the extraction from the bathroom which is far superior to the old fan unit and almost silent.

This helps demonstrate that a system can be designed and installed into any home.

Importantly it’s the attention to detail during the installation that ensures an efficient running system is delivered and the customer can enjoy the benefits once commissioned by us.
