The top-down method is the best way to light a fire, whether you’re using wood or smokeless coal. Recommended by HETAS and Burnright, this method ensures your fire burns hotter, cleaner, and more efficiently, while reducing smoke and tar buildup in your chimney.
How to Light a Fire the Right Way (Top-Down Method)
🔥 For Wood:
1️⃣ Start with large logs at the bottom – Use properly seasoned or kiln-dried logs (moisture below 20%).
2️⃣ Layer dry kindling on top – Arrange in a crisscross pattern for better airflow.
3️⃣ Add firelighters – Use natural firelighters, not paper or cardboard.
4️⃣ Light from the top – This allows the fire to burn downward, preheating the flue and reducing smoke.
5️⃣ Keep air vents open – Start with vents fully open, then adjust once the fire is established.
🔥 For Smokeless Coal:
1️⃣ Start with a bed of smokeless coal – Spread a layer of HETAS-approved smokeless coal at the firebox base.
2️⃣ Add kindling on top – Arrange dry kindling over the coal to help it ignite.
3️⃣ Use firelighters – Place them among the kindling for a smooth start.
4️⃣ Light from the top – Allow the kindling to ignite, gradually heating the coal below.
5️⃣ Control the airflow – Keep the bottom air vent open to ensure the coal burns properly.
Why the Top-Down Method Works Best
✅ Cleaner burn & less smoke – Lighting from the top reduces unburnt gases and emissions.
✅ More efficient heating – The fire preheats the chimney, improving draft and helping your fuel burn efficiently.
✅ Longer-lasting fire – Large logs or coal ignite gradually, so you won’t need to refuel as often.
✅ Better chimney health – Reduced smoke means less soot and tar buildup, keeping your flue cleaner longer.

💡 Tip: Always use seasoned wood or HETAS-approved smokeless coal for the cleanest burn. A well-maintained chimney helps your fire burn more effectively, so regular sweeping is essential.
