In celebration of World Urbanism Day on Friday 8th November, we're pleased to showcase one of our projects focused on urban design and placemaking.
Allen Pyke Associates created a landscape concept and detailed design proposals for this mixed-use development in Goodmayes, East London, for our client . The scheme, which includes public realm, greenspace and green roofs, gained full planning consent in 2021.
The development will provide public realm and communal amenity space for new residents and the wider neighbourhood. It will create a new residential quarter, a new train station access, a 3-form entry school, a community hall, a reprovided Tesco store, a new plaza with commercial space and extensive amenity gardens for residents. The residential element comprises approximately 1,400 mixed tenure residential units in 14 medium and high-rise towers.
We are proud to work alongside creative urban designers and masterplanners to design great places, such as RUSS DRAGE ARCHITECTS LIMITED

As temperatures rise, urban areas are feeling the heat more than ever. With cities often experiencing the "urban heat island" effect, the need for effective cooling solutions has never been more urgent.

Recent efforts are focusing on integrating more trees and green spaces into our communities. Cities like Detroit are leading the change, planting thousands of trees to provide much-needed shade and reduce surface temperatures. Studies show that increasing a city's tree canopy by 10% can lower temperatures by 1.8°F (1°C).

The United Nations is also advocating for sustainable cooling methods that do not contribute to further climate change. Planting trees not only cools our environment but also improves air quality, enhances community wellbeing, and helps to combat the impacts of climate change.

The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) has recently brought attention to an important urban planning issue: many modern cities overlook the needs of children. Their blog highlights the importance of designing urban spaces that cater to young people, contrasting past and present urban environments.

The blog advocates for multi-purpose, child-friendly street designs and draws on concepts like Urban95, which considers urban spaces from a child's perspective. It emphasises the need to reclaim and repurpose urban areas to be more inclusive and supportive of children’s needs. Organisations like Fields in Trust produce a lot of good policy that becomes enshrined in Local Plan Policy across the country. It is good to see that the TCPA are engaging with key organisations and government to see our towns and cities through the eyes of children and drive best practice in play and amenity. Play is a key part of growing up, sharing joy, learning and well being for all ages and an integral part of place making and landscape. It’s worth a read.

London’s rivers are set to see a boost in wildlife under the latest phase of Mayor Sadiq Khan’s biodiversity plan. Following the success of the beaver reintroduction in Ealing, the next stage aims to restore habitats for water voles, eels and otters.

Key initiatives include adapting the River Lea for eels and bringing otters back to the River Roding, alongside other projects to enhance riverbanks and improve flood defences.

Since 2016, £30m has been invested in growing the city’s biodiversity, with more funding available through the “Green Roots fund” for local communities and councils.

We work with specialists on river restoration and habitat creation.
