Once the rain comes back in earnest, damp problems tend to make themselves known pretty quickly. If you noticed any patches appearing on walls or ceilings last winter, it's worth getting them looked at now, while the weather is still dry enough to investigate properly. Catching damp early is almost always easier and cheaper than dealing with it once it's had a season to develop.

Smoke alarms, tested and working. Carbon monoxide detector in good order. Gutters clear of leaves and debris. Draught coming in under any doors or around window frames. None of these are big jobs, but they all make a difference over winter, both for safety and for keeping the warmth in.

The heating goes back on properly around this time of year, and it's usually then that people discover what needs fixing. A radiator that won't get warm, a boiler that's making a noise it didn't make before, a room that just never quite heats up the way it should.

These are the kinds of things worth getting looked at sooner rather than later, before it's cold enough to make them a real problem.
