ASBESTOS THE HIDEN DANGER -
When planning and undertaking work on your house you must consider if the works will disturb any asbestos. It is deemed that any house constructed prior to the year 2000 contains asbestos unless proven otherwise. Asbestos or asbestos containing materials may have been used during the original construction of the the house or during subsequent refurbishment, alteration or even decoration works.
Disturbing asbestos by cutting, drilling, sanding or working it in any other way is likely to release free asbestos fibres that are respirable and cause lung cancer and other fatal lung diseases. These fibres that get released are microscopic and not visible to the naked eye, the shape of the fibres means that once inhaled get stuck into the lining of the lung and are not dislodged by the usual bodies defence mechanisms.
DON'T PANIC...Asbestos that is in good condition and left undisturbed will not cause you or your family harm.
BE CAUTIOUS - Your property is deemed contain asbestos unless proven otherwise. If your are planning any kind of building or refurbishment works for your health and the health of your family and others who might be affected by the works you must be satisfied that no asbestos will be disturbed by the works or that any asbestos that is present will be removed or managed in accordance with the Control Of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
