Great floors start below the surface. 🔍

Before new flooring is installed, the base must be properly assessed. Moisture checks, secure timber, suitable flooring-grade plywood, priming and smoothing can all form part of the preparation.

Every subfloor is different, so the correct system depends on the substrate and chosen floor finish.

Beautiful flooring starts with careful preparation 👌

Behind the scenes at our latest job in a basement flat in Hove, removing the old laminate and preparing the base for its new flooring.

Our moisture checks didn’t show high readings. However, the building dates from before 1900, and basement floors in older properties deserve particular care. Moisture conditions can change, so a satisfactory reading today doesn’t rule out future moisture coming through the subfloor.

That’s why we’ve included a rapid damp proof membrane (DPM) as a preventative measure to help protect the new flooring.

Next comes the primer and a variable-depth smoothing compound to address uneven areas and create a smooth base ready for installation.

It’s the work beneath the surface that helps the finished floor look its best and perform well for years to come 💪

🍂 Autumn colours, exquisite floors

The seasons can change how we want our homes to feel. Spring and summer invite light, airy colours, while autumn and winter draw us towards richer tones and cosy spaces. Changing daylight also affects how flooring colours look, so it’s always worth viewing samples in your room at different times of day.

Our Exquisite recommendation this autumn? Deep green walls paired with rich walnut flooring and soft, warm lighting. The earthy greens complement the warmth of walnut beautifully, creating an inviting look that works throughout the year. Add cream furnishings and natural textures to soften the finish.

Whether you prefer engineered wood or a walnut-effect luxury vinyl tile (LVT), Exquisite Flooring and Surfaces Ltd can help you choose a floor that suits your home, lifestyle and colour scheme.

We supply and install flooring across Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham and the surrounding East and West Sussex areas.

The screed looked perfect… so why wasn’t the floor ready? 👀

Our first 5 mm coat gave us a smooth base, but the floor was still 15 mm below the huge patio-door frame. The client wanted their new flooring to meet the doors neatly, so we used levelling pins to guide a gradual rise in the subfloor.

Then came the satisfying bit: laying the flooring and seeing that transition come together. 🙌

It’s the prep you don’t see that makes the finish you do.

Planning new flooring in Sussex? Drop us a message — we’re always happy to talk through the tricky bits.

From blank canvas to herringbone perfection 👌

A recent project completed in Hove Park, with careful subfloor preparation, precision laser setting-out and every plank individually fitted to create this beautiful flowing herringbone finish.

Herringbone takes a little more time and patience—but when the finished floor looks like this, it’s definitely worth it! 😍

From template ➡️ to tight finish 🔥

Engineered herringbone steps done properly — no guesswork, no shortcuts.

• Started by templating the step to get a perfect fit within those tight walls
• Transferred the layout to keep the herringbone running clean and balanced
• Dry laid and adjusted to keep everything symmetrical
• Installed with solid nosings to frame it properly and take the wear
• Final fit locked in 👌

This is where detail matters — one wrong line at the start and the whole thing drifts. Getting the template right makes the install look effortless (even though it isn’t 😅)

What do you think — border steps or full herringbone all the way? 👇
