Sometimes, the best ideas start with noticing what could be done better 🤔

For Ben Sherwood, that realisation came from working in the building services industry.

As an electrical engineer, Ben saw first-hand how much goes into delivering a successful project. Behind every drawing and model are engineers working through complex problems, balancing competing requirements and figuring out how everything will fit together in the real world.

But he also saw a problem 👇

BIM models could look okay on a screen without always accounting for the practical challenges of installation, coordination and buildability.

Meanwhile, engineering teams were under increasing pressure to deliver more, often without the extra time or resources required.

This is why in 2024, he set up Model Space with a simple idea:

➡️ Bring engineering knowledge and specialist BIM expertise together, giving project teams support that goes beyond producing drawings.

The aim was never just to create models; it was to help engineers solve problems, make better-informed decisions and deliver projects with greater confidence.

If you’ve ever been in a chaotic MEP coordination meeting, you’ll probably recognise a few of these…

✔️ “Can everyone see my screen?”
✔️ “Which revision are we looking at?”
✔️ “That wasn’t in the last model.”
✔️ “Who changed the ceiling height?”
✔️ “We’ll pick that up offline.”

And somehow, an hour later, you’re still trying to work out what actually got agreed 😭

"We haven't looked at the model recently. Nothing's gone wrong yet."

A client said this to us recently, and it got us thinking…

Just because nothing has gone wrong yet, it doesn't mean there isn't an issue waiting to be found.

So, ask yourself:

🔍 When did you last properly review your BIM model?
🔍 Is it a regular part of your week, or something you only check at key project stages?
🔍 If a clash or design change slipped through today, how long would it take for someone to notice?
🔍 Are you reviewing to prevent problems, or only when something goes wrong?

If any of those made you pause, it might be worth building regular reviews into your routine. Catching clashes, design changes and coordination issues early is far easier (and cheaper) than fixing them on site.

A clash found in the model is a problem.

But a clash found on site will be a much bigger one.

The earlier potential issues are identified, the more time and flexibility there is to find a solution before they start affecting other aspects of the project.
