Thanks to all our customers for the work/contracts it’s been a busy year and we’ve seen a lot of new places in Britain this year and made a lot of new friends along the way, many thanks to Mark ‘Howie’ Howard for going along with the crazy work trips I involve him in, also best of luck to our long standing apprentice Kieran who left to follow his dream of being self employed.

How appropriate that one of my next posts was going to be about the relationship between lightning and surges in electrical installations, we install many different types of SPD’s in installations new and old feel free to contact us for any information

Introduction:
Lightning is a powerful force of nature that can pose significant risks to electrical installations in properties. Understanding the relationship between lightning and electrical surges is crucial for safeguarding our homes and businesses from potential damage. In this post, we will explore how lightning can cause electrical surges, the risks associated with them, and preventive measures to protect your property.

1. How Lightning Causes Electrical Surges:
When lightning strikes near power lines or utility equipment, it can induce a sudden surge of electricity into the electrical grid. This surge travels through power lines and can enter properties through electrical outlets, phone lines, cable connections, or other pathways. It can overwhelm the electrical system, causing damage to appliances, electronics, and other connected devices.

2. Risks Associated with Electrical Surges:
Electrical surges resulting from lightning strikes can have several detrimental effects on a property's electrical infrastructure and connected devices:

a. Damage to Electronics: Electrical surges can fry circuit boards and sensitive components within electronic devices, rendering them inoperable.

b. Fire Hazards: Surges can overload electrical circuits, causing overheating and potentially leading to electrical fires.

c. Data Loss: Unprotected computers and data storage devices are vulnerable to surges that can corrupt or erase important data.

d. Lifespan Reduction: Frequent surges can gradually deteriorate the lifespan of appliances and electrical equipment, leading to premature failures.

3. Preventive Measures to Protect Properties:
To mitigate the risks associated with lightning-induced electrical surges, consider implementing the following preventive measures:

a. Surge Protectors: Install high-quality surge protectors at critical points in your property's electrical system. These devices divert excess voltage away from sensitive equipment, providing protection during surges.

b. Lightning Rods: Installing lightning rods on the roof of a property can redirect the electrical charge from lightning strikes safely into the ground, reducing the likelihood of damage to electrical systems.

c. Unplugging and Surge Suppression: During a thunderstorm, unplugging sensitive electronics or using surge suppression power strips can offer additional protection.

d. Grounding: Ensure that your property's electrical system is properly grounded. Adequate grounding provides a path of least resistance for electrical surges, diverting them safely into the ground.

e. Insurance Coverage: Consider obtaining insurance coverage that includes protection against lightning damage to your property and connected devices.

Conclusion:
Lightning strikes are a natural phenomenon that can result in electrical surges capable of causing significant damage to properties. By understanding the relationship between lightning and electrical surges, and taking preventive measures like installing surge protectors, lightning rods, and ensuring proper grounding, you can significantly reduce the risk of damage to your property and connected devices. Stay informed, stay safe!

Im going to take a minute to highlight the Importance of Electrical Maintenance, due to recent jobs and call outs we have found quite a few close call moments with the state of repair of various electrical installations lately, I have attached some pictures to show what we are finding and hopefully show the Importance of Electrical Maintenance and inspection and testing🔍

Faulty wiring, outdated components, and hidden hazards can pose serious risks to your safety and property. Regular electrical maintenance is essential for maintaining a secure and reliable electrical system. 🏠⚡️

🔧 By inspecting, testing, and addressing potential issues, electrical maintenance helps:

1️⃣ Ensure Safety: Early detection of faults prevents electrical accidents, fires, and electrocutions, keeping you and your loved ones protected.

2️⃣ Enhance Efficiency: Regular maintenance optimizes energy consumption, reducing utility bills and environmental impact.

3️⃣ Extend Lifespan: By identifying and replacing worn-out parts, you can prolong the lifespan of electrical equipment and prevent costly breakdowns.

Don't take chances with your electrical system! Schedule a professional electrical maintenance check today to identify and address any potential faults, ensuring a secure and efficient power supply. 💡💪
