Stoneworks

Stoneworks Surveys are carried out by an Associate Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) who is also qualified in Conservation of Masonry.

We provide expert and impartial surveying services using an innovative blend of traditional inspection methods and drone technology to produce accurate condition reports for residential and commercial clients. Our building condition surveys include aerial inspection and photography of roof coverings, chimneys and rainwater goods using a multirotor drone operated by a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)

certified pilot. We can identify deterioration of building fabric and defects within individual construction elements before failure causes long term damage. And if your building suffers from water penetration we can investigate and recommend appropriate solutions. Clients benefit from our in-depth knowledge of historic building materials which is underpinned by extensive and practical trade experience. Stoneworks can also assist clients by sourcing suitable contractors and coordinating a project. We are fully insured and health and safety compliant. Our location is ideal for undertaking works in central Scotland but we are happy to consider projects elsewhere.

It’s not every day a routine building survey results in Police Scotland and the Army being called out!

I came across these Selfac self-acting automatic fire extinguishers hanging in the roofspace of an Edinburgh townhouse. Wondering what they were I did some research and discovered that the Selfac "self-acting automatic fire extinguisher" was patented in 1935 and manufactured by the FE Proprietary Company of London during World War Two. It was designed to self-activate in the event of a fire and explode, scattering a fire-suppressing powder.

Handling of these extinguishers requires extreme caution as they can contain small explosive heat-sensitive charges and be highly unstable. They can react to heat or sudden movement and should be taken away and destroyed by the appropriate authority.

After advising the sellers' agent, Rettie Estate Agents, they made the necessary calls, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Regiment attended the property to remove the items and make the area safe.

Conducting surveys of elevated stonework in Edinburgh’s Old Town presents logistical difficulties due to the densely packed architecture and limited access between adjacent buildings. Using drones we can quickly and efficiently inspect and record the condition of these difficult to reach areas. As RICS regulated surveyors with extensive experience in conservation masonry, we provide clients with expertly delivered survey reports.
