All the advice I would give to an ECT about to start their first job! Including some super old photos 😂

The last one might be a bit niche 🙊😆

What would you add/change?

I wanted some beautiful flat stones and they were £15 🙃 so instead I got the boys to hunt some down at the beach!
They’re not the same as the ones I wanted to buy but the imperfections make them far more interesting 😍
Anyone else love to collect stones?

This cupboard of doom has treated me so well 😂
I inherited this time last year and I cannot believe it is still giving me treasures like these 🤩🙌🏻
What’s the best thing you inherited with a classroom?

Had to give this one ago, completely inspired by Early Years | North Yorkshire

So what do we agree or disagree with? 🫣

1. Starting phonics on day one is not good practise - let them settle, get to know them, learn about who they are - connection first always!

2. Learning is always better without a worksheet - hands on learning in play will win for me always!

3. Play in 30 or 35 minute time slots is not long enough - I know a lot of the time we as teachers don’t have the control over this, but for children to get deeply engrossed in play, 45 minutes is too short!

4. Things should only be on the wall when it’s used regularly- we’ve all been there, laminate it at shove it up, no one looks at it, no one cares. Why is it there? It’s just creating visual clutter!

5. Phonics was better before schemes - this one might be niche, but when you were able to just be creative and go with where the children were at, way more fun 🙊

6. The stronger your continuous provision, the less you’ll have to do - if you have great provision, you don’t need to enhance every area!

7. If each child has produced something identical, it’s not art - that’s a closed directed activity, it isn’t art!

8. Writing should be everywhere, not just at tables! I feel like with the recent push on handwriting, people have become scared of children writing when not at a table. Writing should be everywhere - writing while lying on the floor builds those all important muscles needed for handwriting.

9. Death by PowerPoint has no place in early years 🫣 a powerpoint to teach heavy and light? Crazy to me. White rose I’m looking at you 👀

Totally ok if you don’t agree with me, these are just my opinions! I’d love to know what EYFS hill you’d die on 🤣
