The Great British Slate Off 2026 kicks off soon, and we've got one more finalist to introduce before the competition gets underway!

👋 Meet Jacob Blight, Director of Signature Roofing SW. Here's a little about his roofing journey so far.

"I left school at 16 and went straight into a roofing apprenticeship, as I had always been practical and enjoyed working with my hands. From the beginning, I was eager to learn the roofing trade and develop my skills.

"My dedication and passion for the industry have helped me achieve success in competitions, including winning a silver medal at SkillBuild in 2023. In 2024, I went on to win the gold medal and was honoured with the Mason Elliott Award, recognising my commitment, ability, and achievements within the roofing profession.

"Since then, I have progressed further in my career by starting my own roofing company in 2024, which has continued to grow successfully. Building my business has been a proud achievement and has allowed me to take on greater responsibility within the industry.

"I now employ an apprentice of my own and take great pride in passing on my knowledge and skills, helping to train the next generation of roofers while maintaining the high standards that have supported my own success."

Best of luck to Jason, Adam, and Josh as they go head to head at InstallerSHOW from tomorrow!

We are proud to announce our latest campaign, Don't Fall for Fragile.

Falls from height are the leading cause of workplace fatalities, and are a leading cause of injury. We are calling on anyone involved with working at height to pledge and make a change:

• identify risks
• plan safe access
• challenge unsafe shortcuts and poor planning

“Clients, designers and contractors all have a role to play. The principles of prevention tell us that risks should be eliminated or reduced at the earliest opportunity. The safest solution is rarely found once work has already started’ says Gary Walpole, Technical Safety, Health and Environment Officer at NFRC.

You do not have to be an NFRC Member to pledge your support to this campaign. Find out more and get involved: nfrc.co.uk/step-back-and-plan

The Great British Slate Off, in collaboration with SIG Roofing returns next week at InstallerSHOW and we wanted to get to know the competitors better.

👋 Meet Adam, from A L King Roofing Ltd, who will be testing his slating skills on the national stage and hopes to impress the expert judges to be crowned winner of

"I’ve been roofing for 8 years now doing slating, leadwork, and tiling. I got into roofing from a friend many years ago as I didn't have a idea what to do, later down the years found out my grandad was once a roofer too.

"I’m looking forward to the event to showcase what I can do and put my skills to the test. It will also be great to network with others at the event."

We're returning to the Royal Highland Show from Thursday offering mini-masterclasses in slate cutting and other traditional skills.

Attracting thousands of people over the four days, this event is a hugely valuable opportunity to engage with visitors, answer questions about the trade, and enjoy interactive sessions. We've seen some very impressive souvenirs crafted across the years from highland cows to love hearts, and look forward to seeing what visitors create this year.

You'll find us at the Countryside Cottage from tomorrow, pop along and give it a go.

Cutting roof tiles releases respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust—typically containing 30–45% silica. This dust can cause lung cancer, silicosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, employers must prevent or adequately control exposure to hazardous substances, including silica dust.

This is not optional. It is a legal duty.

NFRC is calling on the roofing sector to take action and Cut the Dust. Real change starts with awareness and prevention. Pledge now to receive your campaign kit and certificate.
