“Conservation in action: Long Gallery & Great North Bedchamber 🔍

Last week carried out a detailed, top-down clean of two of Strawberry Hill’s most spectacular rooms: the Long Gallery and the Great North Bedchamber. This work helps us protect fragile gilding, intricate plasterwork, paintings, textiles and floors for years to come. 💛

Why deep clean? 🧹
Historic houses gather dust—especially at height—where it can attract pests and abrade delicate surfaces like our red damask walls and gilt enrichments (the Long Gallery alone was finished with 23.5-carat gold leaf—over 2,000 books of it!). Removing dust is a quiet but crucial part of preventive conservation.

What happened:
• Careful brush-vacuuming with conservation brushes and HEPA vacuums
• Gentle surface cleaning of gilded tracery, picture frames, lights and panelling
• Glazing and fittings cleaned where safe to do so
• High-level dusting of the Long Gallery’s fan-vaulted ceiling from mobile towers
• Paintings lightly dusted with goat-hair tools by trained technicians

Another look at a job we recently completed . ✨

One of the most satisfying elements was cleaning this stunning skylight. Removing accumulated dust and dirt is an integral part of preserving materials and in this instance cleaning the glass restored the origial intentions of Robert Adam and bought natural light back into the space below.
