A Magnolia grandiflora flower; one of my favourite flowers in the horticultural world. It is MASSIVE!! When I got my family to put their noses in this flower recently, words such as ‘lemon meringue pie’ and ‘lemon soufflé’ were used to describe its scent. ‘Fresh and lemony’ was another description.

If grown from seed you might have to wait up to 25 years for the first flower to develop but hell, it’s worth the wait. Such a beautiful and fragrant flower and like the best things in life, so fleeting too.

A beautiful, evergreen tree that loves the sun and with fragrant flowers the size of dinner plates. A total winner in my opinion.

Plant for fragrance by your front door and your experience of both leaving the house and returning to the house is constantly heightened.

Here is a pink Buddleja, that exudes fragrance from July to September (if regularly deadheaded) and is a biodiversity champion. The fragrance it gives off means that leaving or returning home creates a small moment of joy, every single time. I like fragrance all year round so for the spring I might plant a Skimmia Kew Green, for the late autumn a Viburnum x bodnantense and the winter a Sarcococca or a Hamamellis (Witch Hazel) and with these plants fragrance will see me off or welcome me home throughout the year.

A small design consideration for a massive difference to one’s every day life.

Camberwell garden reveal; a small budget for a big impact.

New 900mm x 900mm Piazza White paving from was used to create a clean, modern aesthetic, the house was repainted in sage green to match the kitchen colour palette and a small raised bed rendered in the same colour houses a multi-stemmed Amelanchier underplanted with a mix of evergreen plants, grasses and pollinator-friendly herbaceous perennials in a colour palette of purples, greens and neutrals, hit-and-miss batten fencing provides privacy whilst not feeling too overbearing and the rebuilt wall has two planting pockets within it for climbing roses and herbs. A bbq area within a Flamingo-aggregate space adds a different ‘zone’ to the garden.

Proof that a tight budget doesn’t have to mean a compromise on design aesthetics.
