‘Now or Never’

Acrylic on canvas
80cm x 100cm
2026

Framed as seen.

I continue to find that intimate spaces like bedrooms provide seductive settings for paintings. There’s something about a piece of art giving the viewer unfiltered access to a subject’s personal, private moment that appeals to me. Particularly if that moment is a celebration of one’s vulnerability.

With this painting we find a young man at a crossroads, a point where he must choose to hold on or let go, continue with the familiar or embrace the unknown. It is clear he has chosen the latter and I wanted to create a work that allows us all to bask in the freedom of that decision.

All too often, masculinity is defined as successful when it is strong, commanding and in control. The fall out of this is domination and oppression. I want to paint a different reality, one where a softening of these definitions can lead to a more inclusive future.

‘The God of Bone Idle Boys’

Acrylic on canvas
80cm x 100cm
2026

Framed as seen.

With this new large work I’m starting an exploration of deities and mythical beings that I intend to continue.

Building on the themes of my previous painting ‘People Say I’m Lazy’, I wanted to pay homage to those who know how to kick back and soak up the day without feeling the pressure to conform.

I feel one of the greatest q***r freedoms is realising you no longer need to conform, to try and fit in. This painting is a tribute to that freedom.

I like the diversity of mark making in this work: loose and sketchy around the smaller figure, more solid around the larger one then leading into the background. Definitely drawing on Gaugin’s palette and sense of reverie.

‘Let My Skin Feel The Night’

Acrylic on canvas
80cm x 100cm
2026

Currently exhibited in the Ruby Gallery as part of the Emerging Artist Award.

The first of three new paintings I’ve recently created. Over the last year I’ve been moving my figures out of the bedrooms and intimate spaces they’ve occupied into landscapes. This piece is inspired by a lyric from Jewel’s song ‘Jupiter’. I spent much of my art-making teens listening to her beautiful music. This song is so free and celebratory.

I’ve enjoyed playing with the fantastical elements of these biomes, drawing on my love of the abstract and the realms of science fiction to inspire me.

With this painting I wanted to explore what would be sacred on an alien world. What laws of nature would we be subject to and what might they stir within us?

This is the first of a series using iridescent pearl paint to pick out the figure. I wanted him to have an ethereal quality, as if he is caught between two worlds. Substantial yet fleeting, already half somewhere else. I’m particularly fond of the palette on this one.

Wonderful evening this week. Some truly stunning work on show. Congrats to all the artists and for organising.

Also, a smashing, thoughtful speech from :)

I had three paintings there. Just love how ‘Sulk’ popped on the wall. ‘Morning Glory’ had already sold by the time I got there which was a very nice surprise so didn’t get a pic.

‘Sulk’ and ‘Waterbed Socks’ still available through my website.
