Halfway through a soft pastel painting I always think “There is no way to land this plane” and finish a painting I like.

And sometimes that happens. I wash off the pastel. I cut up the watercolor painting for collage.

But usually it works out.

And in pushing through the less than perfect part, I build my resilience muscles. I improve my brain plasticity. I improve my problem solving skills. I develop courage.

Art does that. Making art is a low stakes way to build resilience.

and when a painting doesn’t work out and I can repurpose it, I learned that it’s not the end of the world. That also builds resilience.

And we can all use more resilience.
