Choosing a locksmith can be really daunting for people, especially if it's your first time! You see lots of ads, you get a lot of recommendations and different price structures.

Here are things we suggest you look out for when choosing a locksmith to use🙂

💶 No call-out fee. In most cases, a reputable locksmith won't charge a call-out fee!

📞 No call center. When you call the number, check you are speaking with a locksmith and not call center staff. Most locksmiths are independent or work as a team with no need for a call center.

✅️ Check their reviews; most trusted locksmiths will have at least a good amount of genuine reviews showcasing their previous customers' experiences of using them.

✅️ Cheapest isn't always the best! A common tactic national companies use is to draw you in with their £49 or £69 price structure. Once they are with you, that price quickly increases and your final bill can end up being thousands! Yes, you heard that right.....

🗣Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially about the price. A fixed or guide price can be given by the locksmith in most cases. They should be able to briefly explain the problem and give you a worst-case scenario price.

Your Locks Need Looking After

Your locks work hard every single day.

A little maintenance goes a long way:
✔ Wipe dirt away.
✔ Use a proper lock lubricant.
✔ Never spray WD-40 inside your lock.

Your locks will thank you!

🔑 If your key won't turn... DON'T force it!

If your key suddenly becomes difficult to turn, don't force it.

Forcing the key to turn, can result in the key snap off in the lock. Leaving you unable to lock or unlock the door.

Instead:
✅ Try locking and unlocking with the door open.
✅ Check nothing is putting pressure on the door.
✅ If it still feels stiff, get it looked at before it fails completely.

A little problem today could save you from being locked out tomorrow.

🔑 TPT Secure Locksmith Tips

One of the biggest myths I come across is that WD-40 is the best thing to use on a lock.

Unfortunately, that's not the case.

WD-40 is designed to displace water and loosen seized parts—it's not a lubricant for locks.

While it might seem to help at first, it can leave behind a residue that attracts dirt and dust, which can eventually make the lock feel stiff or even cause it to fail.

If your lock is becoming difficult to use, a graphite-based or specialist lock lubricant is a much better option.

If you're unsure what's causing the problem, don't keep forcing the key. A small issue is often much cheaper to fix before it turns into a lockout or a broken lock.
