𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸: 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗢𝗿𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝘆, 𝗜𝗽𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗵

Taking a look back at our work, one project that stands out is Athena House at Orwell Quay, Ipswich. Partnering with Watkin Jones, we served as the Civil & Structural Engineers on this innovative 5 to 9 storey building. The development integrates commercial and retail space with covered parking at ground level, student accommodation on the upper floors, and a large internal garden deck above the car park.

Athena House played a pivotal role in the University of Suffolk’s extensive redevelopment of the Orwell Quay dock area, representing the first phase of works alongside new University teaching blocks. Our team implemented a steel frame structure with composite concrete upper floors, a choice that facilitated the fast-paced construction schedule and accommodated the building’s varying heights and complex geometry.

The project was completed on time, ready for the student intake. Athena House is a prime example of our capability to deliver multifaceted developments.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸, 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻

This week, we're showcasing one of our past commercial projects - the John Jones Picture Framing facility in Finsbury Park, London. As Civil & Structural Engineers, we had the pleasure of working alongside DGA Architects LLP to develop this six-storey building. The facility, spanning 57,000 sq.ft., includes design studios, photography areas, and artwork presentation spaces, complemented by an inviting external garden space for staff and a covered car park deck.

For this project, we selected a concrete frame flat slab structure, which was ideal for accommodating the necessary floor-to-ceiling heights and meeting the logistical demands of the building. Utilising the latest 3D analysis and design software, we successfully navigated the complex geometry and levels of the structure, ensuring precise and efficient ex*****on. It's always rewarding to see how our expertise and advanced tools can bring architectural visions to life.

Reflecting on this project, it remains a standout example of our ability to deliver commercial developments that are both functional and creatively inspiring. We're proud to have played a role in creating a space that supports and nurtures artistic endeavours.

At Concept, we take great pride in transforming houses into homes that beautifully blend traditional charm with modern comfort. One of our favourite projects was in Ellesmere Park, Salford, where we extended and remodelled a large, detached house. The goal was to keep the classic elegance of the original building while creating bright, open spaces perfect for modern living. This meant removing the existing rear elevation and extending the basement, ground, first, and attic levels. We also added a large single-storey rear extension to create a spacious, open-plan area that opens onto the garden.

Our team took care of everything from structural design and surveys to feasibility studies and foundation work. We worked closely with FPA Architects from Alderley Edge, whose expertise was invaluable in maintaining the building's traditional look while integrating contemporary elements. This partnership helped us achieve a seamless blend of old and new, resulting in a space that’s both beautiful and functional. While this project was a private dwelling, we also specialise in larger social housing and residential developments, bringing the same level of dedication and expertise to every project.

Looking back on this project, we're proud of how it turned out. The expanded areas now flood with natural light and offer a welcoming, airy feel. This project showcases our ability to tackle complex structural challenges while delivering results that our clients love.

This week, we had the pleasure of working with Declan from Moorside High School in Salford during his work experience. He has been a great addition to our team, engaging with CAD and Revit to create some impressive drawings.

Declan shared, "I chose Concept because I enjoy Maths and design technology. With my dad working in construction, I wanted to explore a professional career in the industry. My time here has reinforced this ambition, and I now plan to pursue an apprenticeship. Using Revit 3D software to model my own house was particularly enjoyable."

colin, our Director, remarked, "It's rewarding to guide Declan in his career choice and provide insight into working in a design office. He has impressed us with how quickly he picked up the modelling software and his growing confidence. Plus, his punctuality is commendable - always 10 minutes early!"

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿

A look back at our Shavington High School project, where we partnered with Simon Fenton Partnership to deliver a strategic extension designed to meet evolving and flexible educational and community use needs.

This project introduced a new public entrance to the sports hall and additional IT teaching spaces. The design utilised SIP panels for structural and environmental benefits offered to cantilever over beyond the structural skeleton and give the appearance of floating over the entrance area.

Our work on this project reflects our dedication to providing innovative structural designs that support and improve educational environments.
