Great pics and write up about the humpback whale I spotted this week, right from the shore at Lochranza….
My mate rang and said it’d been spotted over at Catacol so we ran down to shore and there it was literally 50metres away. I actually screamed I was that chuffed.
The write up mentions the water being warmer, having swum in it recently, trust me, there’s nowt warm about it!!

I whipped my phone out as the whale surfaced, but my pics/videos are rubbish. For now, the memory is good enough!!

Today I set out to complete my fourth and final Corbett on Arran, Caisteal Abhail. I cracked on up North Glen Sannox and I've got to say, my timing was spot on, as the mist and clouds lifted just as I reached the summit, revealing the elegant peak of Cir Mhor surrounded by glens and crags.I spotted a slow worm and a bilberry bumblebee before ascending to the mountain's narrow summit. The view up there was simply exceptional, and I truly felt on top of the world. I then had a long trudge down Glen Rosa before stopping to catch up with a friend, gotta say I was feeling pretty knackered by that point!

Whilst walking up Gleann Easan Biorach, (scoping out some potential spots for my dissertation) I found this Round-leaved Sundew munching away on a Green Leafhopper. Whilst it is a pretty common sight to see these voracious predators scoffing up small flies I thought it was a pretty cool, if not slightly grisly, scene of the bright turquoise of the dying leafhopper against the shining red of the sundew.
A tiny battle in a vast landscape.

A little update on my dissertation! I've finished working at the Inn now so I can focus properly on my research.
Before I could get started with the fieldwork, I've had to complete the ethics paperwork for the environmental and social assessment, as well as a risk assessment. Given the amount of midges and ticks in the area I'll be working in, the risk assessment feels very necessary!
Once everything's been signed off by my tutors, I'll be good to go and can finally start the research proper.
In the meantime, I've been making the most of being up here by trekking around Glen Rosa, swimming in the fairy pools, exploring King's Cave, and walking the coastal path at Doon, spotting some absolute beauties among the wildflowers and butterflies along the way.
Fingers crossed for a speedy sign-off so I can get started on the next stage!
Keep you posted, G ☝️

A crazy week back at home!
I turned 21, my Grandma celebrated her 80th, and it was my mum's birthday too, all within four days of each other.
I had a quick drink with mates, caught up with friends and family, revisited some old haunts in Manchester, partied hard and never changed my T shirt!
Today, I returned to Arran for a few weeks of (dissertation) field research and a bit of a rest!

Work has been mega busy and getting my uni studies done alongside this has been pretty much impossible. So I’ve officially ‘clocked out’ of my job at the Inn, to concentrate on my dissertation research for the remaining couple of weeks. But first, I’m going back home for a few days of rest and a fair bit of partying 🥴
