Meroe Guitars So I've recently built a workshop on my driveway to pursue a career in guitar making.

For those that don't know, I make and create lots of stuff other than guitars! I have a laser engraver that I know how to use - I've previously worked as a CNC operator for a local cabinet maker so can transform your image into a forever etching. I also mill timber - if your favourite tree has fallen, I can take it away and make something beautiful from it. I will try my hand at literally anything wood craft related. I've also recently built myself a lathe. The chair was constructed using this. Due to glue ups etc. I often have idle hands. I fill this time with being creative and experimental. If you have something you aren't sure who to turn to, I can most likely do it. I'm jack of all trades and technically a master of one, not that it's woodwork related!

Here's the finished build. This is beech back and sides and spalted sycamore neck from storm felled trees. Engelmann spruce soundboard with storm khiron radiata bracing. Indian rosewood fretboard, purple heart bridge and head veneer, paua inlay and walnut binding. Cherry heel cap and a padauk end flash. This is going to my nephew Lejon. It's a full size guitar with a 645.2mm scale length but I've reduced the depth of the body so it's a bit easier for him to play, it still has plenty of volume. I think he'll be a happy chap. I'm going to put it on display down at huzzah in the market for a couple of weeks before I gift it to him. If you'd like a custom guitar for a youngster or a new player, get in touch I can build to your requirements. He doesn't use a plektrum so I haven't added a scratch plate but this is easily added at a later date.

All done! I've got 1 high fret causing a bit of buzzing but a quick go with a sanding block and it's ready to go. I've also not oiled the fretboard yet as a few minor tweaks are normally needed. The next 2 guitars have clients so if you want a guitar before the end of the year please get in touch! I'd likely be able to produce another in around august after the 2 already in the works. Sorry about the tunes; I've had my library restricted by meta to unknown artists due to my business account. I'll be sorting something soon but only started a few weeks ago.

Finish is on and I've just done the neck glue up. I've made the bridge and slotted it but need to do some fine sanding before glue up, plus the underside needs to be shaped to the belly of the guitar. This is on my standard 25 ft radius but it can vary a surprising amount depending on temp and humidity. I painted my felt roof the other day and managed to keep the temp below 26 in the workshop today - the bottom of where wood movement is likely. It's not too much risk given how long stuff has been in here or how old it is - some is over 200 years since harvest but it also means I can work in here! Staff safe in the heat!

Head veneer is prepped ready for some polish. There's no filter on this, it will fade a bit but pretty crazy natural colour to this purple heart. I've used paua on the inlay, gifted to me by a friend direct from New Zealand. I've found my mammoth ivory is just a bit brittle to be effective even after vacuum treating it with epoxy. There's suppliers out there that treat it properly but until then I've just picked up some buffalo horn which is jet black so reckon it will look pretty cool!

The next guitar is coming along nicely. Just started on the french polishing. This will keep me busy for the next couple of days but the first round reveals the epic grain. This is beech which is normally pretty uninteresting but there's clear separation between the heart and sap wood and at the transition there's bright pinks. It's not picked up on the camera too well as my high power leds on. More to come! This is going to my nephew lejon and he's been involved in the material choices. He's just started lessons at school. This is constructed from storm khiron felled beech back and sides with a spalted sycamore neck and sitka spruce top. Black white black purfling, walnut binding, purple heart head veneer and Indian rosewood fretboard. I need his input on the bridge material but should have it finished by the end of the long weekend!

It's all done. As I'm trying to make a living from my work, whilst I'd love to keep it in the family, I'm going to be selling it. I'll be taking it down to Huzzah in the market - the new shop associated with Jenca Music School.

This is made from trees felled by storm khiron from my childhood garden. I've nurtured, milled, dried and crafted it all myself. I'm super proud of this piece, think it's the best thing I've ever made from wood aside from my guitars. Added to this is the fact the sycamore and oak used were planted by my late grandfather and I grew up working in the garden it came from. Both the timbers are what's known as spalted. Essentially a variety of fungi have established colonies during the drying process. The high contrast dark lines are apparently chemical barriers created by differing colonies to establish territory.

Chair glue up is going well so far. I haven't carved the seat yet but there will be a bum shape carved into it.

Leg holes all drilled. It's really coming together now. I've added a strip of wenge plus some additional oak that is to be shaped. I've got the leg rails turned, now to add mortises in the legs and rails before a final spin on the lathe for sanding and finishing. I'm working out the back rest which is ready for carving. The chair is taking too long to make it profitable so this may be a one off. Get in touch if you may be interested in this one!
