Nice job from last week. We were called out to look at a this large and old willow tree that posed some concern to a local parish council. As can be seen, there's quite the cavity at the base! The decission was made to repollard the tree beyond previous points in order to drastically reduce weight and alleviate stress at the base. With annual checks and tri-annual maintenance, this was enough to mitigate the risks and enabled the tree to be retained for years to come. Bit of a sad one for us last week, after having cared for this chestnut for the last 10 years, the time finally came that we had to remove it. The tree was down for removal some 10 years ago by a another tree surgeon but we will always go for retention over removal and as such, we opted to carry out lesser work to reduce and moniter the tree going forward. A total of 3 reductions have been carried out over the past 10 years to ensure its retained safely but sadly, with the continuous decline of the tree, it had simply become too dangerous to retain. It's been left as a monolith to allow standing deadwood for wildlife habitat and replacement trees are already in but I'm hopeful that there's still some life in it and that it will sprout back a new canopy that is safe to retain for years to come.

Todays job involved some works to a veteran tree in order to ensure it can be retained safely. This veteran ash had many cavities and defects within the crown making it a danger for the pool and summerhouse below. The decission was made to perform a very heavy reduction to ensure its safety. While the work may seem harsh, the alternative would have been for removal, which neither the client nor my self wanted. Having carried out the reduction, the tree can be retained safely for many years to come, not only retaining a feature that's been part of the landscape for probably circa 200 years, but also still retaining most of the cavities (now free from large amounts of weight and sail above them) which are great for habitat for all the local wildlife.

Before and after from today's job...a bit of hedge laying for a change!! Not something we get to do often as there doesn't appear to be much call for it but it was by far the best option for this particular hedge and enjoyable as a change. Around 33m in total. All stakes and crooks scavenged from the waste material keeping waste to a minimum and negating the need to out source a load of materials

We attended a callout late last week at Middle Rasen Church for a storm damaged tree. As you can see, it had failed fairly catastrophically while also destabilising what remained which meant the remainder of the tree was unsafe and sadly needed to be removed. We quickly installed a ratchet strap to hold the remaining tree together until we could attend to deal with it early this week. Thankfully no one was hurt and very luckily, it only damaged 1 head stone. If anyone has any worries over their trees please feel free to give us a call or message and we can assess and advise on any issues there may be. We have the equipment, experience and expertise to deal with any potential situation.

Chainsaw carvings a hoot but there's not mushroom left here for any more!!

We were tasked with the removal of several large conifers in Tealby to expose the red oak, crimson king and tulip tree they were hiding as well as allowing the property to benefit from extra light from this south facing aspect. Instead of just removing them, we carved the stumps to make a feature of what was left. All that's left if for the client to landscape the area.

The rest of the timber from the trees is also due to be milled for other otojects such as logs stores, further reducing the waste. Watch this space!!

Afternoon all, hope you're enjoying your weekend.

Having been on 2 callouts this weekend I felt it necessary to highlight something.

In the drier summer months, when canopies are full of leaves and often containing some kind of seed, mature trees can suffer from something known as summer branch drop. In short, its when mature trees loose large limbs for seemingly no reason.

Although this may cause concern, often, there's little to worry about. It's just a natural occurance attributed to many factors such as (but not limited to) drought, meaning less moisture within the tree (less flexible put simply) and full leaf canopy and seeds/nuts which will increase weight and wind sail.

Should you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us (or other reputable arborists). Removal of the tree is very rarely required however some works may be viable to mitigate the risks of future failure.
