Danielle Westerhof: Librarian - Historian - Writer Undertaking historical research for organisations and individuals; providing support for historic libraries, from surveys to cataloguing.

Historian, librarian, writer…

Those words describe me quite well! What's driving me are curiosity, a love of books, and sharing my knowledge with others. With over fifteen years of researching the past and writing about it, and nearly ten years of experience working with and in historic libraries, I am in an excellent position to provide support for organisations and individuals hoping to unlock their past. Whether you need a historian to help you research an object, building, landscape or library collection, I am able to plan and deliver her findings to a high standard. I also undertake surveys of historic book collections and can advise on cataloguing and basic collections care. Based in the Midlands (UK), I have easy access to archives, libraries, and other repositories, for example in London. On my blog, Behind the Spines, I write about the books that interest me and research projects I'm involved with. Why not find out more on my website?

CALL FOR PAPERS
(This was just emailed to me, so apologies for the copy and paste nature of this post...)

Greek Matters
A Workshop at the University of York
19 July 2018, Tree House, Berrick Saul Building

This one-day workshop will consider the intersection of Hellenism and material culture in the early modern world (1400-1800). Expanding upon recent interest in the influence of Greek antiquity on early modernity, this workshop sets out to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue that explores the reception of texts alongside other encounters with the past: the circulation of images, the collecting of antiquities, archaeology, architecture, epigraphy, etc. From difficulties in printing the Greek alphabet to developments in Neoplatonism, is there a special dialogue between Hellenism and the engagement with matter and material form that emerges for the early modern period? How is ‘Greekness’ imagined and reconstructed across media? We are interested in materiality understood in its broadest sense and welcome proposals on anything from book historical approaches to those considering Hellenism in dialogue with art, architecture, the material world or the philosophy of matter.

We welcome submissions for 10-minute papers that broadly consider early modern Hellenism and material culture. Given the collaborative and convivial aims of the workshop, we encourage the submission of works-in-progress as there will be substantial time for discussion and conversation. We invite scholars from a wide-range of fields and interests to submit, including those working on Byzantium, the Ottoman empire, the late medieval period, and the eighteenth century. Proposals should take the form of 150 word abstracts and be sent to [email protected] and [email protected] by Friday 11th May 2018.

There may be some funding available to contribute towards the travel expenses (within the UK) of junior scholars (PhD students and those within 5 years of submission): if you would like to be considered for this funding then please let us know in your submission email. Proposals for presentations that are accepted but which cannot be given for financial reasons will still be considered in future publication plans, so do please contact us or submit a proposal even if you will not be able to attend.

This event is generously sponsored by the Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies.
