Quite a few of you have mentioned spotting the SurgeVolt van parked up on the promenade over the past few months — this is the project we’ve been working on.
When you open up older buildings, you never quite know what you’re going to find.
Over the past five months, SurgeVolt Electrical has been delivering the full electrical installation for the refurbishment of five residential flats, working alongside Quayside Construction to completely transform the building.
As with many older properties, once work began a number of hidden surprises quickly came to light.
The previous fire alarm system had been wired in standard PVC cable that had simply been painted red, rather than using the correct fire-rated cable. There was no emergency lighting installed within the communal areas, and the original electrical intake for the building was located in the basement, which immediately raised concerns from both a safety and accessibility perspective.
To bring the building up to modern standards, we installed a new three-phase supply into the property, relocating the intake position to the front entrance of the building for proper access and compliance. From there, individual electrical supplies were distributed to each of the five flats.
The project also included the installation of a full commercial fire alarm system complete with control panel, alongside emergency lighting throughout all communal areas, ensuring the building now meets current life-safety requirements.
Internally, each flat received a complete electrical installation, finished with details such as feature lighting above the kitchen islands and brushed chrome accessories to give a clean, modern finish throughout.
The top floor flat also required a dedicated off-peak supply to feed storage heaters, installed as part of a government-funded grant scheme.
All systems have been fully tested, certified and commissioned by SurgeVolt Electrical.
