It’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and at Hexagon Design, we’re proud to be taking positive steps to support our people.

Today, Cris, our Principal Engineer, attended a Mental Health Awareness course delivered by the Lighthouse Construction Charity. The session is designed for the whole workforce, helping to open up conversations around mental health and provide a better understanding of the signs and symptoms to look out for.

The course covered:
What mental health is and how to challenge stigma
A basic understanding of common mental health issues
Ways to look after your own wellbeing
How to support someone who may be struggling

The construction industry faces some of the highest rates of su***de in the UK, with construction workers being four times more likely to die by su***de. It’s a stark reminder of why these conversations matter and why awareness, education, and support are so important.

Hexagon Design was engaged to deliver the design of a new maintenance facility at Tonbridge Depot for GB Railfreight, enhancing the capability for locomotive operations.

The scope of works included:
• Main building design, incorporating both substructure and superstructure
• Full mechanical and electrical design, including fire alarm, CCTV, lighting, heating, compressed air, and small power systems
• P-Way design, including track approaches and track over the inspection pit
• Diesel fume extraction system to support safe working conditions
• Design in accordance with Network Rail standards
• Integration of an overhead crane to facilitate maintenance activities
This project reflects Hexagon Design’s capability to deliver fully integrated, multidisciplinary solutions within the rail sector.

Design Delivery: Canton Bogie Drop Facility

Hexagon Design is proud to have supported the delivery of a new bogie drop facility at Canton Depot, providing comprehensive design and consultancy services throughout the project lifecycle.

Our involvement included Principal Designer duties, alongside the design of both temporary works and permanent works, ensuring a coordinated, safe and efficient approach from concept through to construction. Hexagon also provided ongoing construction phase support, working closely with stakeholders to maintain alignment and delivery quality.

As the construction phase now approaches completion, the project stands as a strong example of integrated design supporting safe delivery within a complex rail environment.

Design Excellence: Peterborough Maintenance Hub 🚧

Hexagon Design is proud to have delivered the design for a 95-metre-long maintenance hub to support the rolling stock operations of GB Railfreight.

Providing a comprehensive consultancy service, our involvement spanned from initial feasibility studies through to outline and detailed design, ensuring a fully coordinated and efficient solution aligned with project requirements.

A key focus of the scheme was the development of a sustainable, carbon-reduced facility, incorporating:

✔️ Monolithic slab foundation with integrated jacking provisions
✔️ Two embedded tracks
✔️ 6.3t overhead gantry crane
✔️ Triple-skin roof lights covering 10% of the roof area
✔️ External permanent way alterations
✔️ Wheelset storage area and access road
✔️ Foul drainage with volume attenuation
✔️ Fume extraction and comprehensive M&E design

This project demonstrates Hexagon Design’s ability to deliver technically robust, sustainable and operationally efficient design solutions for the rail sector.
