We’d like to introduce you to our latest probationary team member, Sarah Hoyle. Sarah has recently moved onto our call out list. We’re turning our spot light on Sarah this week!

1. How long have you been in the team?
I joined the support team in March 2023 and became a trainee in October 2023. I have recently became a probationary member, meaning I can now go on call outs.

2. Why did you join the team?
I’ve always been a fan of the outdoors and as a nurse I enjoy helping people so why not put the two together.

3. Did you have any ‘background’ experience?
Before joining the team I had done some hiking around the Cheviots and the Lake District but nothing compared to what Mountain Rescue actually involves.

4. What do you enjoy most about the team?
Being part of a larger team, everyone looks out for one another, offers support if needed, and obviously being able to help people when they are in need.

5. What’s your favourite bit of kit?
As an intensive care nurse I have to say my medical kit; being able to provide lifesaving treatment outdoors.

6. What do you think are the opportunities for women joining the team?

I think everyone within this team are treated equally, opportunities are proposed to the whole team and if there is a particular interest you have, it is encouraged to participate regardless of gender. We have also been given new kit specifically fitted for women so items fit a lot better!

7. What’s advice would you give to any women considering joining the mountain rescue team?

Go for it! Mountain rescue is inclusive; there are women in mountain rescue teams across the UK in a variety of different roles which to me, speaks for itself!
