Introducing...Caley Creations!

I'd hoped to just rebrand this page to save you all having to 'like' another page, but Facebook is extremely picky about name changes, so I've gone for the new page option.

Feel free to head on over and click the Like button, all updates from now on will be on there. And thanks for supporting RogueTwo Robots over the years. Here's to the future!

Welcome to Caley Creations! Home to all the crazy contraptions that come out of my workshop, including Coyote (Robot Wars Series 9 & 10), replica builds of Robot Wars house robots Shunt and Dead Metal, and everyone's favourite mischievous mechanoid, RORI!

It's been almost ten years since RogueTwo Robots became our new team name. The focus at the time was solely combat robotics, but it's time for a refresh to reflect the broader range of projects emerging from the workshop. Also taking some insurance measures incase Disney decide to make a sequel to Rogue One!

Don't worry, combat robots will still feature, just with some new bedfellows. Rebranding coming soon :)

Here we go! Hope it's not too anticlimactic, test space was a bit limited. Will go flat out once the bucket and axe are working too.

Got to love it when even lazy days are reasonably productive. After finishing off a few parts for Rori, attention turned back to Shunt today. Fitted a baseplate to mount things on, re-assembled the drive train and wired a basic circuit up. All this means that you lucky people can expect a test drive video this weekend :)

Also ordered up some rather key components; check out those lovely rams! The last main construction hurdle to overcome is designing and making the four bar linkage for firing the axe, so with the ram now purchased, I can start planning that out. Still a lot of overall work to do, but hopefully not too long before it is all fully operational 🤞

A new backbone/spine actuator for Rori this week. There was one previously fitted but it was smaller so had to be fitted right at the rear of the robot and struggled to lift the front-heavy body without putting strain on the chassis. This much larger actuator removes a lot of that strain and adds rigidity to the body. It's controlled by a Gimson Robotics CU-X3 DC motor controller box, with key fob operation, so I don't need to mess around with connecting and disconnecting motors and leads before being able to operate Rori's body. Nifty little unit!

Rori and Shunt are in the workshop this week, getting some love and attention. Rori has worked well at both the Glasgow Maker Faire and RoboNerd 2018, but there were still aspects of it that were unfinished or which I have wanted to improve with hindsight. Bigger linear actuators, more linear actuators, it's a linear actuator goldmine. Gonna need a bigger transmitter to control everything!

Shunt has been undergoing some aesthetic work; in its state at RoboNerd I'd say I was happy with about 80-90% of it, however some things still irk/irked me. The biggest challenge has been the rear plough. Spent yesterday working on it to try and improve its look and make it appear less 'stumpy' when mounted on the chassis. It doesn't stick out as much at the top now and the mounting arms have been refitted to a lower position to be more accurate to the original and to allow the plough to sit more naturally. I'm still not totally happy with it but it's the best that can be done without remaking it entirely (which will happen somewhere down the line). Other items on the to-do list include fitting the motors and chains for a test drive and checking the fit of some new components, which should arrive tomorrow 😎

Better late than never! A short video log of the build of RORI for the Glasgow Maker Faire, plus some action shots.

The initial mechanoid plan dates back to late 2015 but then Robot Wars came along which took priority. Eventually it made it to life this summer. Built over a tight seven day timescale, I just managed to finish it on time (barring some additional fine tuning and improvements).

For the Robot Wars buffs, the motors are the ones Scar ran in Series 4, the steel baseplate was due to replace the aluminium lid on Scar but never did, the wheels are (I assume) spare ones from Storm 1 and the main body actuator powered the bottom jaws of Coyote in Series 10.

A brief build diary video of R.O.R.I in preparation for the inaugural Glasgow Maker Faire on 29th July 2018 at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.

Ta-da!

Introducing R.O.R.I. - Remotely Operated Robotic Individual.
It'll be roaming around at the Glasgow Mini Maker Faire 2018 at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow tomorrow, armed with a water pistol, though it may not be needed with the rain forecast!

Regardless of the weather, it's sure to be a great day, so get along to check out all the brilliant makers and their creations if you can.

See you there!

Some good progress has been made over the past couple of days in the Cave of Blunders with Glasgow Mini Maker Faire 2018 preparations. Still a bit more to go on this creation, but hoping to get the mechanical elements finished tomorrow with a view to wiring and operation on Monday.

Just a cheeky teaser shot for now. All I can say is; I have severely underestimated the usefulness of jubilee clips for many years.
