🚨Here is why you always need a qualified Air-Conditioning Engineer to carry out installations:🚨

We attended a job this morning which was strange and dangerous but sadly seems to be becoming a frequent occurrence.

With this year’s high climate and how busy the air-conditioning industry has been, a gap in the market has meant so many other trades are turning a hand to becoming ‘have a go’ air-conditioning engineers. This system was installed by an electrician who somehow must have obtained the correct certification to supply and install this Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioning system to a server room.

We previously did a planned preventative maintenance at this site and found that this unit wasn’t operating correctly. We returned to complete diagnostic works and cleared any existing fault codes on the unit. Upon clearing all the fault codes, the unit sprang into life and made all the right noises, but was still not producing cold air.

We found an abnormally high pressure in the system, which was quite alarming. The engineer's first thought was that there must be some kind of blockage in the system, he was right. What we eventually found was that the nitrogen that is used to pressure test a system had been carelessly left in the system, and all electric and power had been turned on for the equipment to be used normally.

It turns out the blockage in the system was because the outdoor units service valves had not been opened on commissioning. Fortunately they called in the right people and we are on site right now using the correct methods to commission this client's air-conditioner. This really is a disaster that has been avoided, had the nitrogen and refrigerant gas mixed whilst the system was on and running, this air-conditioning system could have potentially become a bomb. Had our engineer not been cautious, today could have gone very differently.

We care a lot about our industry, we know the risks in our industry and it is essential that works are carried out by proper qualified people.

Whilst we don’t expect or wish to be everyone's first choice for service, we really do advocate that the general public does their due diligence when choosing their preferred contractors. Our industry does have fatalities because of jobs like this.

We were called out to a butcher’s in Whitchurch, a regular client of ours, as their display counter was not operating correctly. On our engineers arrival it was noted that the cabinet wasn’t kicking into cool due to it’s old mechanical thermostat and defrost controls.

As you can see from the pictures, we’ve now upgraded the cabinet with a modern digital controller, giving them reliable cooling performance and a clear digital temperature display, bringing their counter firmly into the modern age. This is one of the many many many many many air‑conditioning installs we have completed in the last six months, this time at a gorgeous barn conversion in Ravensmoor. The client wanted a system that blended seamlessly with the character of the building while delivering modern comfort, and the finished result speaks for itself. Comfortable temperatures doesn't have to mean sacrificing aesthetic, and these nice slick Mitsubishi wall and ceiling units do just the trick!

It’s been an unusual year for the air‑conditioning industry. Many manufacturers sold out of their annual quota by early July, and stock has been in extremely high demand due to the weather. While we could have switched to lesser‑quality brands, we’ve chosen to maintain our standards and wait for fresh stock from our trusted manufacturers - Mitsubishi, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.

A huge thank you to our loyal clients for your patience. New stock is arriving through August, September, and October, and we will be able to fulfil installation enquiries very soon!

We feel very lucky to have such great clients in Nantwich, it really does mean the world to be able to service the variety of businesses in our hometown. We met Rumen in the early days of The Rolling Pin Bakehouse. Anyone who goes to the bakehouse will know what a lovely man Rumen is, he is truly one of a kind. Our MD, Wayne often pops in there with his son for a delicious cinnamon swirl and I’m sure many Nantwich based people can agree how delicious they are! Since opening The Rolling Pin Bakehouse on Welsh Row in 2025, they have become an essential part of the Nantwich business landscape offering high quality cakes and baked goods! 🥐🧁

When Rumen called about an upright freezer that wasn’t holding temperature, we swung by as soon as we possibly could to investigate what the issue was. Given the recent heatwave, we have had our diary and our hands full, but we will always find the time for our customers! Upon investigation it was evident the compressor had failed, even though the cabinet was still in great conditioning. With a cost of a similar replacement cabinet looking like £1500, it made sense for us to source and replace the compressor for a third of the cost. A job done well as always, and the staff at the Rolling Pin Bake House will be happy that they're back up to full production.

We recently removed an old J&E Hall unit from a well known pub in Weston, Crewe. The customer had been told from a previous inspection that the cellar cooling unit needed a new compressor, but, after much deliberation and contacting our suppliers, we found that this unit was just too old to source parts for and the part we needed had been made obsolete. This meant we had to start the process of replacing the old cellar cooling system with a nice new J&E Hall Cellar Cooling unit, the version that superseded the previous model.

We installed this new one, which includes a 3 years parts & labour warranty. Now this customer will be able to continue to sell nice cool pints all summer long! Not many people know that cellar cooling and ice machines are something we can supply, repair and service too. It's a small percentage of the types of jobs we attend, but they are just as important for businesses as air-conditioning and refrigeration. It’s a refrigeration engineer you need to call when an ice machine or a cellar-cooling issue arises.

At Big Green Fridge, we love our hometown of Nantwich, and all the businesses that add to the buzzing Nantwich landscape. We are truly lucky to have such a range of high quality food establishments, and we always love supporting local, which is why it was an honour to install this new air-conditioning at Naaz Indian Restaurant on Pillory Street.

This job involved the removal of their old tired air-conditioning systems and replacing it with a nice shiny new one. The original model wasn’t giving back what this restaurant truly deserved in terms of cooling power due to the fact it was an old unit and system. We had looked at repairing the old units initially, but due to the age they were irreparable. This new unit will offer better cooling coverage all through the restaurant and a much more pleasant temperature for staff and customers.

Any of our followers planning to go to Naaz over the summer months, be assured that you will be in lovely cool temperatures as you enjoy their delicious cuisine. What a result!

It may be no surprise that due to the weather last week we have been busy busy busy!

Here is a recent install we completed at Marshfield Bank in Crewe. This job involved removing an old 12kw unit and replacing it with this 14kw. This upgrade is more suitable for the space and will work more effectively and efficiently than the previous size. This is something we see a lot of in this industry. A lot of companies will undersize equipment to make the quotes look competitive, but it may not always be the right option for your space, even if the price is more palatable.

At Big Green Fridge, we will always oversize as we want a unit that performs! There’s no point installing something that isn’t going to do the job as effectively as you need it to, especially with the scorching temperatures of last week. You want something that is going to cool the space as required.

The weather has really ramped up our diary, thankfully we get days like this to soak up the sun! ☀️

This was from another job in Frodsham in Cheshire working with our partners Heat Pumps 4 Pools. It’s always a pleasure working with these guys, they really know their stuff and have a massive array of parts and heat pumps to suit all applications. They are a super efficient company who are meticulous to detail and extremely knowledgeable in their field, and we here at Big Green Fridge feel very fortunate to work with such a great team!

As you can see from the pictures, one of the things our engineers love about this industry is the places it takes you, the people you meet and the diversity that comes with every day. On this particular day in Frodsham, we were working for a lovely client who was replacing an existing swimming pool heat pump for this new Thermotek one. This was a very straight forward exchange and a thoroughly nice day working in the Cheshire countryside surrounded by beautiful scenery. The old system was decommissioned of refrigerant and disposed of responsibly along with the old heat pump. Another job well done!

Last week we were hard at work installing this new cellar cooling system at Crewe Lyceum Theatre. This job involved the removal of their old tired unit and replacing it with this shiny J&E Hall, just in time for the busy Summer season! This means that anyone going to see any of the wide range of excellent shows at the Lyceum over this summer, will be safe in the knowledge that your pint is chilled to perfection by yours truly!
