An EICR isn’t just for landlords. For homeowners, it can provide valuable information about the condition of an electrical installation : especially when buying or selling an older property, after an extension or major alteration, or when the history of the wiring is unclear.

During an EICR, a qualified electrician carries out a visual inspection and electrical testing, then records any observations in a report. This can help identify issues such as damaged equipment, inadequate earthing or bonding, overloaded circuits and other potential safety concerns.

An EICR is not a guarantee that an installation will remain safe indefinitely, but it is a useful snapshot that can support informed decisions and help prioritise remedial work where needed.

A Green Electrical Services provides professional EICR testing for homeowners, buyers, sellers and landlords across Northwest England.

Thinking about having an EV charger installed at home? Before booking, ask your installer:

• Is my consumer unit suitable for the charger?
• Will the earthing and bonding be checked, and will the installation comply with BS 7671?
• Is suitable RCD protection included?
• Will load management be needed to prevent overloading the property’s electrical supply?
• How will the cable be routed to keep the installation neat, tidy and well organised?
• Are you compliant with current OZEV/EVCC requirements if I’m applying for a grant?
• What quality materials, testing and certification are included?

A safe, reliable EV charger installation is about more than simply fixing a unit to the wall. At A Green Electrical Services, we plan every installation carefully, use high-quality materials and take pride in clean workmanship for homeowners across Northwest England.

That “quick electrical job” may need urgent attention. Watch for scorch marks, buzzing or crackling, loose switches or sockets, warm accessories, exposed cables, poor labelling at the consumer unit or repeated tripping.

These aren’t just cosmetic issues. They may indicate overheating, loose connections or unsafe alterations.

Do not remove accessory covers, open the consumer unit or attempt live testing. If it is safe to do so, switch off the affected circuit and keep people away from it. If you notice smoke, a burning smell or immediate danger, leave the property and call 999.

Contact a qualified electrician to investigate properly. The photo shows a neat, clearly labelled FuseBox consumer unit as an example of good organisation ; it does not depict a failed DIY installation.

Before winter arrives, a few small electrical jobs can make your home safer, more practical and ready for the darker evenings.

1. Install a properly protected outdoor socket for seasonal lighting, garden equipment or other outdoor use.
2. Plan garden lighting now, before the evenings draw in. Good positioning can improve safety, security and kerb appeal.
3. Check exterior fittings and cables for cracks, corrosion, loose covers or signs of water ingress. Damaged equipment should be dealt with promptly.

Our genuine garden wall-light photo shows an example of the garden-lighting element only ; it does not show an outdoor socket or all three jobs.

Never attempt electrical work yourself. A Green Electrical Services provides neat, tidy and well-organised installations for homes across Northwest England, using quality materials and workmanship.

Thinking about solar PV or battery storage? Your consumer unit is an important part of the preparation.

Before new generation or storage equipment is installed, a competent electrician should assess whether your existing installation has sufficient capacity and suitable space for dedicated circuits. They will also consider the correct protective devices, surge protection where required, earthing and bonding, clear circuit labelling, and compliance with BS 7671.

A solar-ready installation is not a one-size-fits-all upgrade. The right approach depends on the property, existing consumer unit, incoming supply, cable routes and planned PV or battery system. Every installation needs an individual assessment before work begins.

A Green Electrical Services provides neat, well-organised electrical installations for homes and businesses across Northwest England.

An EICR is more than a quick visual check : it’s a detailed assessment of the electrical installation and its safety.

During the inspection, we typically:

• Check the condition of visible cables, accessories and the consumer unit
• Test circuits, including continuity, insulation resistance and polarity
• Assess protective devices such as MCBs, RCDs and RCBOs
• Check earthing and bonding arrangements
• Record any issues clearly in the report

Observations are categorised by risk. C1 means danger is present, C2 means potentially dangerous, and FI means further investigation is required. Any recommended remedial work should be explained clearly, so you can make an informed decision.

For landlords, inspection and certification requirements vary depending on the property type and tenancy rules, so it’s important to check what applies to your circumstances.

A tidy electrical installation is about far more than appearance.

Neat, well-organised cable runs and properly made terminations help support safer workmanship, make inspections clearer and simplify future maintenance. If a fault develops, an organised installation is easier to understand, test and trace : helping reduce disruption and avoid unnecessary work.

It also leaves a professional finish that reflects the quality of the materials and workmanship behind the installation. Whether domestic, commercial or industrial, careful attention to detail matters from the first cable run to the final inspection.

This real installation is a great example of how a clean, well-planned finish should look.

Planning to buy an electric vehicle later? Your property may need preparing now.

For landlords, flat owners and commercial property managers, installing chargepoint-ready infrastructure can make parking more attractive, support future EV demand and add value to the property. It may also help you meet the requirements for relevant grant schemes, depending on the property and current eligibility rules.

Preparation could include assessing the electrical supply, planning cable routes and installing suitable cabling to dedicated parking spaces : even before a charger is fitted. Getting this work considered early can help avoid disruption and costly alterations later.

A Green Electrical Services provides neat, organised and safety-focused EV charging solutions for domestic, commercial and industrial properties across Northwest England.
