Big changes are coming to lighting efficiency rules in England, and now is a good time to plan around them.

The new 2026 edition of Approved Document L (Part L) raises the minimum efficiency for fixed internal lighting in dwellings from 75 to 105 light source lumens per circuit-watt. It takes effect on 24 March 2027.

In plain terms: older, less efficient lamp types won't make the grade, while modern quality LEDs do. If you are planning a renovation, extension, kitchen refit or rewiring in the next couple of years, specifying the right fittings now will save rework later.

The good news is that most well-made modern LED downlights already exceed the new threshold, and quality fittings bring extra benefits: changeable bezels to suit your decor, selectable colour temperature so you can choose warm or cool light, dimming options, and lower running costs for years to come.

Halloween weekend is coming, and outside electrics get more of a workout than most people realise.

Pumpkin lights, garden decorations, festive displays: it all adds up, and the front garden in late October usually means rain, damp leaves and dew. A few simple checks keep the fun safe:

• Use lighting and decorations designed for outdoor use, with the right IP rating for where they sit
• Plug outdoor decorations into a socket protected by an RCD, ideally a purpose-installed outdoor socket rather than a trailing extension lead through a window
• Check cables, plugs and connections for damage before use, and keep connections off wet ground
• Never leave decorations powered on overnight or while the house is empty

Extension leads through door and window gaps are a common sight at this time of year, and they are exactly the sort of thing that trips RCDs when the weather turns: or worse, they create a real risk where cable runs and connections are not protected.

The heaters and electric blankets are coming out of the cupboard again, and this is the time of year when old ones show their faults.

Quick pre-use checks before you switch anything on:

Electric blankets:
- Replace any blanket more than 10 years old. Sensors degrade with age.
- Look for scorch marks, frayed wiring, worn fabric or a buzzing sound. Any of those, and the blanket should be replaced, not repaired.
- Store flat or loosely folded. Tight folding can damage the internal wiring.

Portable heaters:
- Plug them directly into a wall socket. Extension leads can easily overload.
- Keep at least a metre away from curtains, sofas and anything combustible.
- Never leave one running unattended or while you sleep, and never use one to dry clothes.

The fire statistics came out this month and the trend is worth knowing about.

Fires linked to fixed wiring in England hit a 16-year high in the year to March 2026: 2,575 fires involving wiring, cable, plugs and mains installations. That is up 13% over the last five years, while fires from faulty appliances have fallen.

The risk now sits in the wiring behind your walls, under your floors and above your ceilings. The part you cannot see, and often the part that has been quietly doing its job since the house was built.

Warning signs to watch for:
- Sockets or plugs that feel hot
- Scorch marks around sockets or switches
- Flickering lights with no obvious reason
- Breakers that trip repeatedly, or RCDs that will not reset

If your home has not been looked at in years, an EICR is how you find out what state the wiring is actually in. It is a proper inspection and test of every circuit, with anything found graded so you know what genuinely needs attention.

Landlords in England must have one every five years. Homeowners are not required to have one at all, which is why the wiring in owner-occupied homes often goes unchecked for decades. If your property is over 25 years old, or you have noticed any of the signs above, it is worth considering.

No driveway? Charging at home could soon be easier. From 21 October, qualifying cross-pavement charging channels in England can be installed without separate planning permission. A channel is a protected route across the pavement for your chargepoint cable, helping you charge at home without leaving a loose cable across the pavement.

The on-street residential chargepoint grant may cover up to 75% of eligible costs, capped at £500, subject to eligibility. Council or highway authority consent may still be required for the pavement channel, so check with your local council first.

Thinking about home EV charging? A government grant of up to £500 per chargepoint could help eligible applicants with installation costs, and the scheme is due to run until March 2027.

Support may be available to eligible homeowners, renters, flat owners, landlords and businesses, but the rules can vary. Check the latest terms and your eligibility on gov.uk before booking.

Not sure what happens during an EICR? An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a detailed inspection and test of a property’s fixed electrical installation. It checks the condition of wiring, the consumer unit, sockets, lighting, earthing and bonding, and identifies any safety concerns.

In England, landlords must have the electrical installations in their tenanted properties inspected and tested by a qualified electrician at least every five years, and provide tenants with a copy of the report. Homeowners can benefit from periodic checks too, particularly when buying or selling a property.

If observations are found, the report explains their significance: C1 means danger is present, C2 indicates potential danger, and FI means further investigation is needed. Any required remedial work will be clearly identified and explained. An up-to-date EICR is about safety and compliance, not a sales exercise.
