Arboricultural & Vegetation Management Contractor
Tree Surgery • Utility Arboriculture • Woodland Management
Gloucestershire • Herefordshire • Monmouthshire

Alt Arb Ltd is a family run business that begun life in October 2010 as a self employed business operating as Altitude Arboriculture. In recent years the business has grown from strength to strength and in December 2018 we decided to form Alt Arb Ltd. The business has evolved from the initial introduction into woodland management several years ago into a successful tree surgery business offering a range of arboricultural services to Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. We’ve been able to develop our skills and arboricultural knowledge which has allowed us to undertake tree work for a range of domestic and commercial clients. From simple pruning to complete tree removals of large trees in confined areas, utilising our specialist skills and equipment we aim to complete the job safely and efficiently. As well as our tree surgery services we also provide stump management services, including stump grinding. Our aim is to provide a professional service that gives our clients the best management for their trees, whether it be a single tree or an entire woodland. All of the tree surgery work we undertake is carried out in accordance with the guidance stated in BS3998:2010 Tree Work Recommendations. We can also liaise with Local Authorities on the client’s behalf when undertaking work on trees with Tree Preservations Orders or within Conservation Areas. When required we will also liaise with Utility Authorities to arrange additional requirements such as Power line Shutdowns. As a business we’re looking to the future and increasing our client base steadily along with continuing in providing a great service to all our existing clients.

🌳 Tree Preservation Order Works – Churchdown, Gloucestershire 🌳

A recent two-day project in Churchdown saw Alt Arb Ltd undertake specialist crown reduction works on three mature trees protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs).

The trees included a Common Beech, Horse Chestnut and Copper Beech.

Following the necessary consent, we carried out carefully planned crown reductions of approximately 1–3 metres where appropriate, focusing on:

🌳 Selective pruning back to suitable growth points.

🌳 Removing deadwood and historic dead pruning stubs.

🌳 Reducing excessive peripheral growth while retaining natural crown shape and balance.

🌳 Preserving the trees’ long-term structure, appearance and amenity value.

With the trees situated alongside a residential road, careful management of the working area, pedestrians, vehicles and neighbouring properties was essential throughout the project.

Good arboriculture isn’t simply about making trees smaller. It’s about understanding how to manage them responsibly while retaining their natural character.

The finished result was three carefully managed mature trees, with the client extremely pleased with the work undertaken.

A thoroughly rewarding project for the Alt Arb team! 🌳💪

📍 Based near Newent, covering Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and surrounding areas.

If you have mature or protected trees requiring professional arboricultural management, we’d be happy to discuss your requirements.

First working week with the Arb Digger 🌳🦾

After months of planning and working out exactly what we needed from a compact mechanised setup, the new Takeuchi TB320 has had its first proper week at work.

Straight into restricted-access woodland work, extracting and loading Western Red Cedar and diseased sycamore, working between retained trees and then helping us unload, grade and stack the timber back at the woodyard.

The biggest takeaway so far:

Useful capability beats maximum capability.

The aim was never simply to buy the biggest machine we could transport. It was to build a compact system that could physically get to awkward work, manoeuvre where larger plant becomes cumbersome, and still handle meaningful timber once it gets there.

There’s plenty still to learn and refine, but the first week has been extremely encouraging.

Now to keep putting it to work. 💪

ALT ARB LTD — VEGETATION MANAGEMENT 🌳🚜

Yesterday we said one more piece of the Alt Arb picture was about to fall into place.

Here it is.

We’re expanding and formalising the Vegetation Management side of Alt Arb Ltd — adding further capability alongside our established arboricultural operations and giving us another way of tackling demanding vegetation-management, access and timber-handling requirements.

At the centre of that development is our new Takeuchi TB320 compact excavator, configured with a Klou rotating timber grab for controlled timber and vegetation handling.

This isn’t simply about adding another machine.

It’s about combining the right people, plant and method around the requirements of the site.

One more piece of the Alt Arb picture is about to fall into place. 🌳

Over the last year, we’ve been deliberately building Alt Arb around capability — bringing together the right people, plant and method to solve increasingly demanding arboricultural and site-access problems.

We’ve already introduced the Utility Arboriculture side of the business.

Tomorrow, we reveal the next step.

It’s a capability that has been developing quietly in the background — and one that will open up a much wider range of work for Alt Arb moving forward.

Monday. 👀

Commercial Vegetation Management | Telecommunications Infrastructure 📡🌳

A recent vegetation-management project completed at a telecommunications site in Gloucestershire ahead of planned crane and infrastructure works.

Alt Arb was tasked with clearing and pruning vegetation around the compound and access route to provide the necessary working space and vehicle clearance for the next phase of operations.

Working alongside the site team, vegetation was selectively removed and reduced, with arising material processed and removed from site.

The completed works left a substantially improved access corridor and working area, allowing the specialist teams following us onto site to continue with their programme.

Projects like this are an important part of what we do at Alt Arb Ltd — combining arboriculture, vegetation management and machinery to solve access and clearance problems around infrastructure and difficult sites.

📍 Pauntley Court - Specialist Water Access Dismantling

When access is impossible, the solution has to be engineered.

A recent project at Pauntley Court, the historic birthplace of Dick Whittington, presented a technically demanding scenario.

A mature Crack Willow had suffered a major limb failure, leaving significant weight suspended over a pond island with no direct ground access.

Swipe to see the access constraints and rigging setup.

⸻

🔧 Engineered Solution

This was not a standard dismantle.

A Norwegian reeve system was designed and installed, anchored from the mainland and paired with a traction bollard, allowing us to:
• Safely haul severed timber across open water
• Maintain full control of load movement from a remote rigging point
• Precisely manage forces throughout the dismantling process

All climbing and rigging equipment was installed within the tree and transferred across by boat, with a large proportion of the work carried out directly from the water.

⸻

⚠️ Access and Risk Management

Working from a boat introduces a completely different operating environment:
• Constantly shifting work platform
• Restricted positioning and stability
• Increased reliance on rigging accuracy and system control

Through structured planning, controlled rigging systems, and disciplined ex*****on, the work was completed safely, efficiently, and without environmental impact to the pond or surrounding landscape.

⸻

🌿 Outcome

The failed limb was fully removed, all material extracted to the mainland, and the site left clean, controlled, and ready for ongoing estate management.

⸻

💼 Why This Matters

This is where advanced rigging and access techniques separate standard tree work from specialist contracting.

We regularly support:
• Estates and private landowners
• Developers and commercial sites
• Infrastructure and utility clients

where access is restricted, risk is elevated, and precision is non-negotiable.

Repollarding a Common Ash tree to maintain the tree’s crown from interrupting the Utility Lines located adjacent to the tree.

We’d previously pollarded the tree back in 2019 for our client and by maintaining the pollard we’re able to maintain the tree as a feature in the front garden of the property.

Working in conjunction with the tree work was carried out during a Power-line Shutdown due to the proximity of the Low Voltage Power-lines.
