With all the wet weather we’ve had recently, now is a good time to check that your roof and guttering are doing their job properly.

Heavy and prolonged rain can quickly highlight issues such as slipped or damaged tiles, leaking valleys, blocked gutters, loose mortar and failing roof details.

Another roofing project completed by M.H.M Roofing.

This project involved stripping out the existing elevation before constructing a new roof structure using bespoke timber trusses to form the extended roof.

We then installed new breathable membrane and battens before re-tiling the roof and completing the ridge and valley details.

From the structural work right through to the finished roof, everything was completed with careful attention to the existing building and the new extension.

Lead flashing pulling away from the wall

This is a good example of why it’s worth keeping an eye on your roofline.

When lead flashing starts to pull away from the wall, the seal between the roof and the wall is compromised. Water can then get behind the flashing and potentially work its way into the roof structure.

It might look like a small issue from the ground, but left unattended it can develop into a much bigger problem.

Spot something like this on your roof? It’s worth getting it checked before the next heavy rainfall.

Another small repair completed.

The mortar had fallen away at the bottom of the verge where the valley meets it, leaving the area open to the weather.

I’ve cleaned it back, repaired the defective section and repointed it to leave the verge sealed and weatherproof again.

It’s often the small areas like this that can cause problems if they’re left too long.

When roof tiles reach the end of their life

These clay tiles have suffered years of weathering and are now blistered, cracked and starting to crumble.

Once tiles get to this stage, they’re no longer doing the job they’re meant to do. Continuing to patch individual tiles can only go so far when the surrounding tiles are also deteriorating.

This is a good example of why it’s worth keeping an eye on the condition of your roof before small problems turn into bigger ones.

Roof membrane & battens

The membrane and battens are a big part of getting a roof right, even though most of it will never be seen once the slates are on.

Once the breathable membrane is fitted, the battens need to be set out accurately to the correct gauge for the slate being used. Getting that measurement right is important so the slates sit correctly and the laps are maintained throughout the roof.

On this job, the roof is being carefully set out and battened ready for the slating stage.

It might not be the most exciting part of a new roof, but getting the preparation right makes a big difference to the finished roof.

Why we use felt support

The felt support at the eaves is there to stop the roofing felt from sagging into the gutter and to help direct any water that gets beneath the tiles safely into the gutter.

You’ll often see plastic eaves support trays used, but on this particular roof there was a large kick in the fascia, which left a much bigger void behind the fascia than usual.

Rather than leaving the felt support spanning that gap and allowing it to sag, I’ve fitted a timber batten behind the fascia to fill the void and support it properly.

It’s one of those details you don’t really see once the roof is finished, but getting the eaves right helps prevent water sitting where it shouldn’t and keeps everything working as it should.

Another gutter clearance done.

A good bit of build-up in these gutters, but all cleared out and flowing properly again.

It’s easy to forget about your gutters until they start overflowing, so getting them cleared regularly can help prevent water running where it shouldn’t.
