🚨 The Anatomy of a High-Performance Soundproof Floor 🚨
When you’re converting or renovating flats, standard flooring specs just won't cut it. To truly isolate sound between living spaces, you have to look beyond basic building regulations and design for true acoustic science.

On our recent flat renovation, we stripped the bathroom and bedroom floors right back to the bare joists to install a high-performance, multi-layered acoustic sandwich system.
Here is exactly how we built it and the methods behind the spec

1. Absorption (The Cavity)
The Spec: 100mm Rockwool acoustic insulation packed tightly between the exposed joists.

The Science: Empty floor cavities act like a drum, amplifying noise. The dense, fibrous matrix of the Rockwool traps airborne sound waves (voices, TV) and converts that acoustic energy into heat, killing the "drum effect" entirely.

2. Mass & Damping (The Sandwich)
The Spec: A structural 18mm hardwood ply base, topped with an 8mm Tecsound mass-loaded vinyl membrane, capped off with another layer of 8mm hardwood ply.

The Science: To stop sound, you need mass and elasticity. By trapping the flexible, high-density Tecsound membrane between two rigid sheets of plywood, we created

Constrained Layer Damping (CLD). When footfalls or sound vibrations try to pass through the floor, the elastic core absorbs the mechanical shear energy, deadening impact noise before it can travel into the structure below.

3. Structural Integrity
Using premium hardwood plywood instead of standard softwood or chipboard doesn't just add mass—it delivers ultimate stability. This is especially vital in the bathroom zone, providing a completely rigid, flex-free floor that prevents any movement under the final finishes.

The result? A rock-solid, whisper-quiet subfloor built to last and engineered to perform. Do it once, do it right. 🛠️

​After an absolute powerhouse of a week, we crossed the finish line this past Sunday at 49 Bull Street in Holt.

​For anyone who loves a bit of local history, this beautiful listed building has some serious pedigree. In recent decades, it achieved widespread recognition far beyond Norfolk as the birthplace and headquarters of Old Town—the iconic, avant-garde British clothing brand founded by Will Brown and Marie Willey.

​While they spent years shaping classic British style, we’ve just finished giving the interior a sharp new look of its own. Balancing heritage rules with modern finishes, we executed a precision mix of traditional, breathable lime plastering and smooth gypsum plastering. It’s safe to say the building has never looked sharper (and it’s used to looking pretty fashionable!).

​With Holt officially ticked off the list, there’s no time to rest on our laurels. It’s straight back down the road to focus 100% on our upcoming Norwich plastering and high-spec acoustic soundproofing projects. No rest for the wicked, but someone’s got to keep Norfolk’s walls flawless! 💪🔨
