John Briggs & Son Masonry Restoration and conservation of historic masonry structures. Brick, flint, stone and lime mortars

“There’s no rising damp.”

That was the conclusion.

So why was the recommended solution to tank the walls, apply cementitious slurry, and replaster a Grade II listed building with modern materials?

This is exactly the sort of advice I see far too often when modern construction thinking is applied to traditional buildings.

Different buildings. Different materials. Different skill sets.

Have a watch and let me know if this sort of thing frustrates you as much as it frustrates me.

It’s a process! Stone repairs on going at St John’s, this time by limestien himself , Mark. All stone worked on site by hand, fiddly little job. It he’s doing a fantastic job. Mark has been performing lime mortar repairs and toned indents to the front door and Cloisters over the last few weeks. Nearly there 💪🏻

We’re just a couple of weeks away from becoming fully accredited log burner installers 🔥

There’s something special about pairing a traditional home with a traditional heat source. A well-installed log burner doesn’t just heat a space — it brings character, atmosphere, and a real sense of heritage back into the heart of a property.

What makes this even more exciting for us is the full journey. From restoring fireplaces and opening up original features, to repairing chimneys and ensuring everything is safe, efficient, and built to last — it’s about respecting the history of a home while making it work beautifully for modern living.

We can’t wait to bring this service to more of your homes very soon.

We back on site for the 3rd and possibly final phase of the regeneration project. Stone repairs, flint repairs, roof and rainwater goods, internal ceiling repairs and anything else that comes up in between.
We’re growing really well at the moment and have some really interesting projects in the pipeline. If you are a great craftsman, project manager or QS, please drop me a DM or email us, we might just be the new challenge you’re looking for

Back on site in The greatests of Yarmouths to tackle some more high level masonry repairs at St Johns. The face flint work is all buillt in a hard cement and there are alot of meters that have detated from the brick core...which is all lime bedded 🧐. We are only taking down the areas that have failed, no need to disturb the rest if its not needed. The lads are really excited to bring you some expalnation videos as this progresses....sort of 🤣

✨ Throwback Time! ✨
A couple of years ago, we had the privilege of restoring this charming outbuilding in North Norfolk. Believed to have once been a kennel, enough of the original structure remained for us to uncover its secrets. Using the existing scars as our guide, we meticulously brought it back to its former glory. 🛠️💫
