Rats in a loft can cause severe and costly damage. Their continuously growing teeth lead them to chew on electrical wires, plastic water pipes, and wooden joists. This destruction creates major fire hazards, risks of flooding, and structural weakening. Additionally, they heavily soil insulation, compromising your home's energy efficiency.
Specific types of damage include:
• Electrical Fire Hazards: Rats chew the protective casing off live electrical wires. This exposes the copper, which can cause sparks, electrical shortages, and severe fire hazards inside your roof space.
• Flooding and Leaks: They can gnaw through plastic water pipes and header tanks, leading to significant water damage, leaks, or burst pipes in the loft.
• Structural Weakness: Constant gnawing on roof joists, support beams, and wooden fascias can physically weaken your roof's structure over time.
• Damaged Insulation: Rats tear up and compress loft insulation to build their nests. This ruins the material, lowers its thermal efficiency, and creates cold spots in your home.
• Contamination: Their urine and droppings soak into the insulation and ceiling boards. This leaves a strong ammonia odor and poses severe health risks, including the potential spread of Leptospirosis (Weil's disease) and Salmonella.
• Ruined Belongings: Lofts are often used for storage. Rats will chew through cardboard boxes, fabrics, and papers to harvest nesting materials, destroying precious or stored items.
If you suspect you have an infestation, tell us:
• Are you hearing scratching or heavy thumping noises at night? (Help us identify it could be Bats, Birds, Rats, Mice or Squirrels).
• Have you noticed any chewed wires, pipes, or shredded insulation?
Rats in Lofts can be caused by issues with drains. Call Siniyon Environmental & Pest Control Services to assess situation and if needed they will recommend a drain survey.
