We've started a new hedge this week in Brooke, Oakham. First, we have to clear the hedge of brambles and lower branches to make it easier when we start laying and also encourages light to reach the base of the hedge.

Then, we start 'pleaching' the branches, meaning we partially cut the main stems in order to bend and weave the branches around the stakes.

Finally, we use hazel or willow binders along the top to secure the hedge and stakes.

Hedgerows are an important habitat for UK wildlife, from supporting pollinators to creating food sources for birds.

If you’re a farmer or land owner, you can apply for Hedgerows and Boundries grants under the Countryside Stewardship scheme. Included in this is the BN11: Planting new hedges scheme where you can create new lengths of hedgerow using native species.

220 metres completed at Stockerston this week. The length we were on had been layed about 15 years ago and had been pretty badly shaded out by the woods it was edging. Laying it again will help to encourage dense, new growth from the base.
