Van Shields vs Hook Locks – What’s the Difference?
When it comes to protecting a work van, van shields and hook locks do two different jobs — and in my opinion, fitting both together gives you a much stronger security setup.
Van Security Shields
Internal and external shields are designed to reinforce vulnerable areas of the van and protect the factory locking mechanism, cables, wiring looms and door latches from attacks through the bodywork.
Pros:
• Help prevent door-skin puncture and handle-spiking attacks
• Protect vulnerable factory locking components
• External shields provide a visible deterrent
• Vehicle-specific options available
• Repair plates can also cover and strengthen previously damaged areas
Cons:
• A shield strengthens a vulnerable area but doesn’t add a completely separate locking point
• It only protects the particular attack area it has been designed for
• Different vans have different weaknesses, so the correct shielding is important
Hook Locks
A hook lock adds an independent mechanical lock to the door. The hook bolt engages into a separate keep and operates independently of the van’s original central locking system.
Pros:
• Adds another physical locking point
• Independent from the manufacturer’s locking system
• Makes forced entry through the load doors considerably harder
• Driver controls when the additional lock is engaged
• Excellent for builders, tradespeople and vans carrying tools or equipment
Cons:
• You need to physically lock and unlock it with the additional key
• A hook lock doesn’t necessarily protect vulnerable factory mechanisms elsewhere on the door
• Like any individual security product, it’s stronger as part of a layered setup
Why fit shields AND hook locks?
This is where you get the real benefit.
The shields protect vulnerable areas and the original locking components, while the hook locks provide an additional independent locking point.
So instead of relying on one type of protection, a thief potentially has several different security measures to overcome.
