Been doing a lot of winter work this Winter including Hedgelaying. Hedgelaying is crucial for our ancient hedgerows, everywhere you go you see hedgerows destroyed with flail cutters not letting the hedge, which is mainly hawthorn and blackthorn flower, the hedge just gets thinner and thinner until it’s gone completely, by laying the hedge it encourages new growth from the pleached stumps which intern thickens the hedge preserving it for many more years to come. Hedges are laid around every 15 years keeping the cycle going not only for the hedge but for lots of British wildlife that rely on the hedgerow corridors that was once all over England, we still have our hedges but if they keep getting forgotten about it will be another piece of our heritage gone. Next time you pass a hedge, have a quick Look, you’ll soon notice the state of them, most hedges you drive past our well over 100 years old and in my opinion just as important than our historic buildings. If I didn’t need the money I would spend all of my winters laying hedges to preserve our English countryside. Here’s a few photos of one I did in Marsh Gibbon this winter.
Many of you might have see them already as my sister put them on first 🙄

Winter especially when the ground is frozen is the best time to clear ditches. This ditch I cleared was in Marsh Gibbon, you couldn’t see the bottom of the ditch at all and it wasn’t running, the water had just built up at the top end which would have made it liable for flooding. It’s running well now though the Robin kept me company the whole way through and the heron turned up at the end, I expect wondering what was going on, he soon came down though and joined the Robin to see what he could find 🙂

Another porcelain patio complete, the previous patio moved causing some of the slabs to come loose this was because of the clay ground and the surrounding trees. To ensure our patio didn't do the same thing we dug out to a depth of approximately 11 inches laid a membrane on top of the clay and covered the area with approximately 8 inches of type one hardcore and compacted with a heavy compaction plate, then we laid chicken wire over the area before laying the 4ft x 2ft porcelain tiles on a 2" full bed of sharp sand /cement concrete mix, the chicken wire will hold it altogether reinforcing the concrete making sure it can't move, I have 27 years of experience and this is the way I will always lay my patios on clay ground. This particular job was in Langford Village in Bicester and the only reason I'll have to go back is to get more of the customers strawberry jam as she makes the best Jam and crab apple jelly in Oxfordshire 😊

We’ve just finished a different kind of pergola today, the customer didn’t want the posts in the ground where they could rot and also didn’t want the corner post being in the way of the view to the garden so we built it like this, now it can rain all it likes and they can still sit in the garden in the dry. We make all bespoke pergolas and garden buildings to size using the highest quality treated timbers and fixings.

Really proud of Simon and David for this job we did in Bicester, sunken hot tub on a reinforced concrete base with hardwood decking built around it along with planting pockets for the trees, lighting done by George from Rockland electricals. It wasn’t a simple job as we had to build in a trap door so the customer can get to the electrics without the frame work being in the way.
