A garden pavilion and alterations to an existing house in South Wales.

Created under permitted development, the pavilion creates additional space whilst establishing a new relationship between the existing home and its garden and surrounding fields.

We had the pleasure of returning to the home recently to photograph and see how the project has settled into its surroundings. The garden has matured beautifully, allowing the pavilion to nestle quietly into the site, with the planting helping to soften the relationship between the new and existing elements.

We’re delighted to have received planning permission for the conversion of this historic Parish Room in Llangrannog into a new seaside home - a second project for the same lovely clients.

Although not listed, the disused Victorian church hall, connected to the adjacent St Carannog’s Church and just steps from the grave of Cranogwen, has many original details and has played an important part in the local community.

The approach to the conversion has been to touch the existing building as lightly as possible, retaining its period character and many of its original features whilst carefully adapting it to a new use and a new chapter in its life.

We look forward to seeing this special building take on a new role within the village, whilst retaining the qualities and character that make it such an important part of its setting.

It was a pleasure to enjoy the sunset from the apartments and terraces at Sainte Adresse on a recent recce, ahead of returning to photograph the project next month. Perched on the cliffs overlooking Cardiff Bay it is lovely to be delivering housing in our own town. We look forward to sharing more of this project soon.

With a new dwelling currently taking shape on site in Gower, a recent visit to Gwryd Quarry gave us the opportunity to gain a first-hand appreciation of the materiality of the local stone, informing decisions as the project progresses.

Understanding the qualities of materials at source is an important part of our design process. Seeing the different processes involved, alongside the variety of colours, textures and finishes available, has helped to inform how the stone might be used within the project.

Using local stone reinforces the relationship between the house and its context, helping the building to sit comfortably within its landscape, whilst also reducing the carbon associated with transporting materials to site.

Following the photoshoot last month, we are excited to be able to share the first images of Hidden House, completed last year in north Cornwall.

Amongst the many positives of completing the project, the most important thing for us is our clients' reaction to living in their new home and we are delighted to hear how happy they are with the finished project.

It was a long but rewarding road to get such a beautiful building to completion, involving so many individuals within the team on the way. Too many to thank all at once but for now we pass our congratulations to all those who helped in the realisation of this carefully-integrated low-lying home, embedded within its sensitive coastal landscape, including:

The RSAW Summer Conference last week was an inspiring event – a critical topic ‘Architecture of Care’ – across People, Place and Planet, with excellent speakers. An exceptional day in a truly wonderful location – Portmeirion.

There are not many better places we can imagine being right now than a natural pool at one of our projects in rural Wales.

This replacement dwelling retains the original cottage form at the heart of the house to inform the massing and site response. The dwelling reuses the existing stone from the site and the original building. We worked closely with and Natural Swimming Pools Ltd from the outset of the proposals as the site and landscape are as essential to this project as the dwelling itself. In our client’s words, ‘time slows down’ here, a theme which feels very suitable for today.

We hope everyone is staying safe during this period of intense heat. The current UK heatwave is another reminder that climate change is already shaping how we live. Good architecture has always responded to its environment; today, that means designing with greater care for both people and planet. As architects, we should be creating buildings that work harder, consume less and leave a lighter footprint.
