In the midst of all the work, projects don't look very glamorous. Mud, materials, half-finished details and a lot of work happening behind the scenes.

Then, almost suddenly, everything starts to come together. The finishes go in, the planting settles, the details connect, and the space begins to feel like the one we imagined on the design desk.

We’ve got several projects reaching that rather exciting stage at the moment. And while we can’t show you everything just yet, here are a few little peeks behind the scenes.

We're expanding and looking for another good pair of hands to join our build team at Frilu. Someone with experience in hard landscaping, paving, groundwork, stonework or general construction.

We're much more interested in someone reliable who takes pride in their work.

Good varied projects across Cumbria, decent equipment, proper materials and a small team. Full-time permanent role, but we'd also speak to someone self-employed who wanted to try working with us first.

Or if you introduce us to someone we employ and they're still here after three months, we'll pay you £500.

The learning never stops.

One thing we’ve always believed at Frilu is that there is always a better way.

Before using a new product or technique on a client’s project, we take the time to test it, understand it and refine the process. In this case, we’re trialling Elite EPO-Fusion mitre adhesive and colour pigments to achieve the cleanest possible mitred joints on porcelain paving.

Could we have gone straight onto site? Probably.

But that’s not how we work.

Our clients trust us to deliver the highest standard of craftsmanship, and that means practising, learning and continually improving behind the scenes—long before a product reaches one of our gardens.

It’s these small details that make the biggest difference to the finished result.

A little revisit... 🌿

Earlier this year we completed this garden transformation, but like much of Cumbria, the weather had other ideas.

The prolonged wet conditions meant we made the decision to delay the planting and allow the garden time to settle naturally. As expected, the new lawn settled over the winter, so yesterday Amanda and I returned to complete the final touches.

The wall has now been rendered, the lawn has been top dressed and re-seeded, and a few final snagging items have been completed.

We're pleased to say the garden is now thriving and looking exactly as we had envisioned.

We'll be sharing the full start-to-finish transformation soon, but for now here's a little glimpse of the finished result.

From this… to this. 🌱

Every great garden starts somewhere.

What was once a tired, uneven area has now been transformed into a fresh, functional outdoor space with a beautifully laid natural stone patio and a newly prepared lawn, ready to become the heart of the garden.

It’s amazing what the right preparation, quality materials and attention to detail can achieve. While the patio is complete and ready to enjoy, the final stage is now in nature’s hands.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed for the perfect combination of sunshine and rain over the coming weeks to help the new lawn establish and create a lush green finish.

We can’t wait to share the next update once it’s fully grown.

Project Update | Bespoke Corten Steel Planters

Every detail matters when creating a truly exceptional outdoor space.

This week marked another exciting milestone as these bespoke corten steel raised planters were delivered and carefully positioned on site, ready to become a defining feature of this garden.

Manufactured from high-quality corten steel, the planters will naturally develop their rich, protective patina over time, creating a warm, architectural finish that sits beautifully within the landscape while offering outstanding durability for decades to come.

A project like this is only possible through collaboration. A huge thank you to Metal Star Fabrication for producing these exceptional bespoke planters. The quality of the fabrication is second to none, and we’re proud to be incorporating them into this unique garden transformation.

Now that they’re in place, the next stages of the project can begin, and we can’t wait to show you how this space evolves over the coming weeks.
