Pressing on with this kibbled quicklime mortar.

17.6% quicklime
61.5% sharp sand
17.6% 6mm crushed and graded recovered mortar
1.8% 1mm crushed and graded recovered mortar fines
0.8% chalk whiting
0.8% fine silica sand

This is the % breakdown of the mix but everything is simply measured out by volume when mixing.

This is mix gives a proper continuous grading curve. The local sharp sand matches the original building perfectly, so the colour and moisture behaviour stay true to the original substrate. Although you can never really crack the code after several hundred years when its likely that the sand veins varies. The reclaimed mortar (6 mm → 0) brings back the building’s own tone and DNA, helping the new work weather into the same rhythm as the old. The finer additions, chalk whiting and silica, tighten the packing, improve cohesion, and give the mix that smooth, workable feel without adding unwanted strength. A breathable, flexible, fully compatible mortar that works with the building.

These additions are non pozzolanic and help to align the performance of the mortar in a way that creates compatability and reliability.

The recovered elements will also include traces of stone from the building and coal/kiln inclusions in microscopic detail which stimulates the behaviour of the lime to reincarnate its origional and historic essence.
